Easy hike
2019年8月 • 好友
We were 4 all aged about 35 and managed to hike up in 1 hour 45 minutes without any break on a cool morning .the descend took us about 1 and a half hour.Having sticks is necessary during descend to avoid load on knees.no restroom facilities anywhere near trail.carry your own water bottle and energy bars.the visit to fire tower was great.the wind force is terrible on top of the tower.

Nice trail but rocky
2019年7月 • 家庭
As expected, no wifi but we found out twice that cell phone service was available. I'm an experienced hiker having lived in New York, Colorado or Vermont most of my life. I was on this trail once years ago. I also trail run around the base of Mt. Ascutney, VT several times a week. However, I'm middle-aged with knees that aren't what they used to be. Personally, I found the large rocks that are made for stepping on intermittently too large to trust my knees. Thankfully, a trekking pole helped to take weight off my weight-bearing knee to allow me to step down when I needed to do so. I still hike and run mountains, but the steps were a barrier. So, take the poles, take your time and enjoy the birds and the beauty. On the way up I did a bird count and needed no poles. We made it up in 2 hours with a few quick water breaks. The ovenbirds were prevalent up most of the trail with a few winter wrens, black-throated green warblers and red-eyed vireos making up most of the singing males. About 1/2 mile from the top, a whole variety of warblers that weren't down further and were singing. Since they are unfamiliar to me, I made recordings to add to the count. On the way down, we took 1.5 hours despite needing to use a pole and watch where I stepped. We both were exhausted but happy we did the hike. Dogs are welcome on-leash. Get on the trail by 8:30 a.m. to beat the crowds and enjoy a relatively bug-free, cooler hike.

Not an easy hike, but worthwhile.

TheHikerDog's review here a few pages back is the most accurate. I'm a 63-year-old, fairly experienced hiker, and I found this hike tough, both on the way up and down. Brings lots of water and carb snacks! It took me, my 2 daughters (in their 20s), and my daughter's BF 2 hrs 25 min to make it to the top, 1.5 hours back. The trail is quite rocky, and if it's wet it can be very slippery, so watch your step, and look for a hiking stick at the trailhead. Be aware that there are no rest room facilities at either end of the trail. Being from NJ, I was was very pleased to see no sign of poison ivy anywhere (yeh!). It was a cool day when we went, and I suggest you pick a similar day - this trail would be agonizing in the heat. Unless they're really hardy and experienced, small children shouldn't be taken on this trail. And oh yeh - you MUST climb the water tower for the view!

Nice hike, must climb fire tower for view
2017年8月 • 家庭
The hike itself was nice, moderate hike, 2 hours 10 minutes going up and 2 hours going down. My husband is in great shape, had our 2.5 yo on his back as well as food/drinks. I'm in moderate health and had our 2 month old in a carrier as well. Our 4.5 yo walked up with a couple stops and most of the way down (she was on my husband's shoulders for the last mile).
The views were very nice but unfortunately had to climb the fire tower to see ANYTHING at all. We packed lunch and sat on the rocks to eat lunch.

Great hike. Easy to follow (marked very clear), it took less time than advertised (3 hrs. 15 minutes total). Incredible views from top of the firetower at top. Enjoy!

3 hour and 30 minutes
2017年7月 • 独自旅游
I almost did not do this climb because the information was conflicting about difficulty, length of time to hike, etc...so here's my update: I am a 49 year old woman in average shape- I hit the gym a few times a week, I don't run marathons, and I carry a few extra pounds...It took me 1:40 to summit. I stopped about 3 times for a few minutes to drink and breathe.... I stopped at the top to enjoy the view, take some pictures and eat a snack then headed down 3:30 back in my car.
THE HIKE: Not hard, but you'll need some endurance. There are lots of rocks and roots, sometimes it goes up at a "breathing like a stalker" pace, and other times it evened out for a great break. I think the first mile was the most difficult. I wore trail sneakers and was fine, although hiking boots would be better for the ankles- especially on the way down. The trail is probably the BEST I have ever been on for markings- it would be hard to get lost on this trail. The trail was well maintained, and would sometimes be wide enough for two across but mostly it would be single file. There are enough streams to keep your dog from being thirsty- but you'll need a few bottles of water.
FACILITIES: There are none. Not up, not down. No water, no outhouse, and no stores nearby...bring your own water.
FINDING IT: I just followed googlemaps- it brought me right there.
THE VIEW: It was nice. Not amazing, but rewarding. Climb the fire tower..the best view is from the top.

Cloudy climb with beautiful leaves

Initially had some trouble finding the Trailhead - it starts in Healdville on Station Road not by the ski area as was listed on Trip Advisor when we went.

Loved the climb -- four hours as advertised and only a bit of a challenge for non-hikers. Cold and cloudy and the top, but the colds parted for some beautiful views. Gorgeous leaves and birch trees!!

Great moderate hike with spectacular views. I took just under 2 hours up and 1.5 down and saw a mother and two bear cubs near the summit attempting to cross the trail in front of the stone chimney, until I screamed and they retreated! Highly recommend. The trailhead is easy to find and has good parking.

A good workout!

We are healthy 69 year olds and this certainly a challenge. Two hours and 15 minutes in each direction. You really have to watch your footing on the way done as there are many tree roots and rocks. We only went up to the first level of the fire tower as we don't like heights. You can go to the ski chairlift a short distance away and see the view from there. Mostly woodland during the climb.

A good hike

Done this one a couple of times with the dog - takes me around 1 hour 40 minutes from bottom to top (dry conditions, late summer, early fall). It will get your heart beating especially as you get closer to to the top and I wouldn't take young children personally but it's a nice challenge and the views from the top are very impressive - definately worth the effort.
