This outdoor theater was much smaller than expected. But, it is a very convenient location, near the town restaurants and for free parking on the street and a couple small lots. The street is barricaded to traffic an hour prior to and during the performance so that only theater goers should have access.
All the staff is pleasant and helpful.
Acting is amateurish because all involved with the drama are volunteers. Though it’s been running for decades, these are not professional actors, they are locals or students from nearby colleges.
Fun thing is that men from the audience are recruited to serve on the jury scene in the second act. Participants receive a certificate.
Music for is drama is a live Bluegrass band.
Tips:
You really don’t need to buy tickets ahead of time unless you are bringing a large group. There are plenty of seats. This is good to know in case unexpected rain is forecast that evening.
If you arrive early, visit the Toliver House museum right next door.
Every Thursday all seats are a discounted $8.
Restrooms are close to seating.
During the intermission the gift shop is open, including snacks.

The Trail of the Lonesome Pine Outdoor Drama is celebrating 60 years this year. The drama is based on the book by John Fox, Jr. "The Trail of the Lonesome Pine," who lived in Big Stone Gap. It is based on the history of Big Stone Gap and the mountain girl, June Tolliver. Having grown up in Big Stone, I was familiar with the John Fox, Jr. home and delighted when the town started the outdoor drama. I saw the drama with it's original cast, that many were friends of my family. I have seen it several times over the years and always enjoy it. While they have made a few changes each year, it is still a very good outdoor drama telling the story of the people and the town of Big Stone Gap. We had very good weather on the night we attended. We were there for the Matz Family Reunion. While we didn't have time on this visit, be sure and visit the June Toliver House adjacent to the Theater to learn more about June Tolliver and Big Stone Gap. Also - reading the book is great to do too.

We had a great evening at this quaint outdoor production. The Quality Inn at Big Stone Gap is very nice and the premiere of the chain award winner. We visited the museums and an excellent winery close by “Mountain Rose”. The wines were award winning as well and delicious! We topped our visit with Natural Tunnel State Park a lovely experience without any strenuous walking!

My husband & I went here on a date night recently. We really enjoyed it! We live in southwest, VA., but sadly never had a chance to see the show... After winning free tickets to the show online we decided to go see it. It’s a great play based on the book “Trail of the lonesome pine.” We went in the evening at 7:30pm & it was a beautiful night. Great story line & actors! We’re so lucky to have had this right in our back yard for years, & hopefully years to come!

For years I have wanted to see the play and finally did with a group of friends. The music was very good and I enjoyed the play. The actors are local and they have put in a lot of practice and time into their roles. We enjoyed ourselves and the only recommendation I can make is to take along some bug repellant as it gets dark and the bugs began to bite!

Enjoyed this outdoor, musical drama the other night on a beautiful evening to be outdoors.
They have local musicians present a short concert prior to the drama which was fun.
The drama was very quite well done - the singing and acting of the characters were of a high quality. It gave a good portrayal of the history and culture of this area.
We were very impressed that at the end of the show the cast came out in the audience and thanked us for coming. I felt that this was a very nice, personal touch.

Set in the little town of Big Stone Gap, VA, the "Trail" drama is an excellent entertainment experience for the whole family. The theater is outdoors, yet intimate, since it seats fewer than 400. Seats are spacious & comfortable, & getting in & out isn't a problem. The production itself is well done - not exactly "professional" by most standards - but good enough to be thoroughly enjoyable. My only complaint is that the show seemed to run a little longer than necessary (2 1/4 hrs.), & that the other nearby attractions (Fox house, museum, etc.) all close hours before the show begins, making impossible to do it all at one visit. You'll enjoy the show more if you read the novel before seeing it, b/c it makes it easier to follow. Not all of the players were well-microphoned, making it a bit difficult to folloow the p;lot at points. But overall, a treat for all ages. We had our 3 young grandchildren with us, & they thoroughly enjoyed it.

Drove down from Pennsylvania and took my wife to see it on our anniversary. Paid extra and got the "Milk Glass Moon" seats. Scored major points with the Mrs. The staff and cast were wonderfully friendly and mixed with the audience after the show. I'll take this over Broadway any day.

There aren't many outdoor plays left. Trail of the Lonesome Pine Outdoor Drama is a fantastic one. Great for everyone. Fun way to spend an evening. A neat look into old time mountain life. All volunteer cast and musicians.

This is a great way to spend a nice evening in SWVA. We enjoyed the acting, and the passion that the actors put into their work. The story of the region is interesting, and it was a lot of fun for everyone to hear it presented in this manner.
