Simply fantastic. Was able to see a good amount of horses and great areas of nature. Very peaceful and NPS does a wonderful job keeping the ground clean and safe. 100% worth the trip and entrance fee.

Horses seen as soon as you cross the bridge. And they do walk right through your campsite. Unnerving for our dog. Many horse opportunities! Also saw dolphins in the water at the lower beach. Awesome beach -water a little rough, All that amazing, but the campground has little to offer. No hot water, no lights in bathroom, no hot water, no sink area for cleaning dishes. sink and shower look like prison issue. and HORSE CRAP ALL OVER! In the road, at your campsite . The camp store that rents bikes and kayaks on our side of the bridge was closed. We ended up leaving 2 days early. First restaurant over the bridge when you leave, "Assateague Crab house and Bar" was a welcome break. Frozen margaritas and a dog house!

Go for the ponies…
Stay,to fully appreciate the wild beauty of nature,at its unspoiled finest.

Just fifteen minutes from Ocean City, MD see this wonderful example of wildlife in beautiful seashore setting. As soon as we drove over the bridge to Assateague Island there was a wild pony grazing in the brush along the shoreline. As we approached the park entrance there were three ponies grazing next to the park’s sign. There were ponies long the roadway. There were ponies grazing in the small dunes at the beach. They were grazing outside the restrooms. If you go there you will see them! Please don’t try to feed them.
There’s a lovely visitor’s center before crossing the bridge. There are educational programs and a gift shop there.
The beach is lifeguarded with a store for snacks, drinks, souvenirs as well as some items for campers. Camping is permitted .
Fees are collected for park entry and also for campers. There is no fee to walk or bike in to the park.

We were about 50 minutes away and care here for a day with a lot of kids. We enjoyed it so much that we came back the next day. Horses were fun, we had no idea there would be so many, probably saw about 30 or more each day. We went on the beach and hiked 2 excellent trails. We did the ranger programs on crabbing and clamming (got 1 crab and 2 clams). The visitor center was excellent and the kids loved the booklet that enabled them to become junior rangers. Fantastic experience.

This park has a dog friendly beach, so we took our pup to have a beach day. It did take some time to enter the park, as they have only two booths to check in admissions, and there was a lot of rubber necking going on due to the wild horses being in the road, and people stopping to take photos. The parking is also a bit limited but we were able to find a spot within a short distance to the beach. The beach was fairly clean and the crowds were not bad at all. There were many families and groups, but there was plenty of room for everyone. There are showers available also, which is always a plus. Definitely recommend for a dog friendly beach.

Be sure to Stop at the visitor center before entering the park for great information about the ponies and amazing hiking trails. This was an amazing experience and we walked all of the trails through many different echo systems from dunes to wetlands. We saw the wild horses, deer, egrets, crabs and fish. Our national park senior passes got us in for free. We didn’t visit the beach although it was beautiful with lots of families enjoying it.

Great place to visit year-round and during the summer is the best time to see a lot of the wild horses or other wildlife. I’m usually here once or twice a week and it’s never disappointing. Great place to bring your family or if you’re a nature lover. it’s also good place to do Milky Way photography or if wallops flight facility is doing a rocket launch. You can see a rocket launch if you go down fairy Landing Road by the naturalist shack and also a great spot for sunset.

Definitely the highlight of a family trip to the Ocean City area. Well worth the entrance fee to see this beautiful place and spend some time at their visitor/learning center. If I had planned differently, I would have stayed outside of OC and driven to Assateague for our beach day and time at the ocean rather than spending time at OC. Saw a lot of families enjoying the beach, and horses with babies were right there enjoying the beach too! It is a tranquil place with different types of hiking trails. There is also a place you can rent boats (kayaks, but probably canoes and other small boats too.) We visited a long time ago during the off season and it was just as beautiful both times. This place is for nature lovers and for everyone who can appreciate the ocean without all the crowds. Saw horses both times.

I’m sorry for the confusion. Dogs are allowed. On the same trip we went to chincoteague and there dogs are not allowed. I had the 2 mixed up and just wanted to clarify so yes go and you can bring your dogs to Assateague.

Planning a day here next week with my 3 and 5 year old. Is one spot better than the next to relax on the beach and see the horses ? Is there a short easy trail? We only have one day so any advice to maximize our time would be greatly appreciated! Thank you!

I would recommend talking to locals, sometimes the horses done run !!! When we were there, no horses ran, but you could go to the stables.

You could book a hotel in Ocean City Maryland and it is 15 minutes away from Assateague.

I am bringing my 2 kids for a June weekend and camping in the state park. I know they’ll love the horses but also will want to be on the beach. I’m not seeing a ton of beach photos on here. Is it normal to do typical beach-y stuff here?

Can anyone tell me the best course to visit Chincoteague National Wildlife Refuge and/or Assateague Island National Seashore from Ocean City, MD?
Ocean City was the closest place (on the beach) I could find to stay for a weekend. That said, I am much more interested in ponies and shelling than a boardwalk.
Are they super far? On the map it looks about 20 minutes?
Tips? Advise?

Assateague Island National Seashore in Maryland is better.I see wildlife all the time when I go to ascertain and have had lots of luck seeing the wild horses and I have been going there since I was a kid and now I’m in my early 50s and know exactly where to look for them.

Hello, My question is regarding campsite check-in procedures. We have booked two different camp sites for two consecutive nights. Night one, we have Site 092 and Night two, we have Site 062. Will we have to check-in at the ranger station moving from 092 to 062 or do we only check-in once, when we first arrive to site 092?

We plan to camp here in July for a few nights. Should we reserve a spot on the ocean side or the bay side? Is there a loop or area that is better than the others? We are experienced campers and understand that conditions can widely vary and mosquitos are expected. Thanks!

At the very end of Bayberry Drive there’s a parking lot next to a roundabout. Is this a public parking area or is it reserved for park rangers/campers? Is it sand or paved? I’m looking at a map and can’t tell.

Yes, that is open parking. The Life on the Dune Trail starts on the south side of that parking lot.
