Historically important event.

The Wreck of the Old 97 happened because the engineer was told to make up the lost time. Officials deny giving the order, but the mail contract had a large fine for every minute the mail train was late. It’s a part of our American History.

The day the mail did not get delivered

There is not much to see but the historical highway marker is well detailed. The tressel where the train derailed is no longer there so there really not much to see. By the way, the mail did not get delivered that day!

How to find the marker

The trip advisor map is incorrect as a previous poster noted. It is the location for the welcome center. We went to the welcome center for help and they just used google maps, which is incorrect as well. The marker is located on Riverside (US 58) between Highland and Henry. You can't see down into the ravine because of the brush.

Where to Find the Marker

I went to the Location listed on TripAdvisor (645 River Park Drive), which turned out to be the Danville Welcome Center -- NOT the "Old 97" marker. The marker is several miles away, on Business 58 west of Main street, only a few hundred feet west of Highland Ct (east of Farrar street).

Marker tells the tale.

The location is marked with a historical marker on Rte 58near the new YMCA location. The wreck was in the ravine locations there. A man I talked to recently lives in a yellow house there and tells me some tracks are still visible near his house not far from the river banks. I suggest a google search to help you get better details if you haven't already.

A marker notes the site

A marker along a busy road. Like many historical sites, all that is left is a marker. A tragedy that led to a well known, at least in these parts, song.

Very little to see at this location

Since the wreck of the Old 97 was over 100 years ago there is very little to see at this location; However, there are many more places around town to view the crash.

Expat on Visa run up from Costa Rica. When I was a "kid" growing up my grandparents lived in Danville. My dad would take me to the site back in the 50's. What a great memory of this area!

Not much to see today but history is in the ravine

While in Danville we stopped at the historical marker near the site where the mail train went off the trestle. There is a painting of the incident on a building in downtown and a model of the accident at the science museum portion of the current Amtrak Station.
