Absolutely stunning. The natural tunnel is a unique wonder. We loved the chairlift ride up and down to see it - so fun! Enjoyed short hike/walk to see the tunnel from the floor and the various overlooks accessible walking down from the top.
We saw advertising for the opportunity to walk through the tunnel on Sunday morning but sadly won’t fit in our schedule. That sure looks like an awesome opportunity. The Stock Creek Passage requires a ticketed reservation so plan ahead if you can!
The campground here is beautiful with flat wooded sites and clean private showers at the bath house. Fantastic park tucked down in the far corner of Virginia!

This park has an odd layout. When you first go in you pay 5.00 for entrance. You drive into the dead end for the visitor center, chairlift, trails, and lovers leap. There is a very small museum in the visitors center. Hopefully you can meet Popcorn, the corn snake while there. She is adorable.
The chairlift is 5.00 round trip. It is a very short ride to the bottom. The views at the bottom are awesome. I wish a train would have come through while there, that would have made it exceptional. There is an old cabin at the bottom as well to tour.
The only reason this did not get 5 stars is the layout. To get to the other stuff you have to drive out where you pay and go around to the right. It is easy to find just odd layout.
I definitely recommend going if in the area. Hopefully you will get to see a train pass through while there.

The park has an overlook of the tunnel with a short uphill hike. Or you can hike a much longer trail down to the tunnel. There is a lift which was not in operation when we visited. There is a small visitors center. (they gave us free granola bars). There is a slight fee. The view was worth the visit.

Honor pay to park, so be sure and pack a $5 bill.
My dog and I thoroughly enjoyed the hike down to this amazing spot. So many have heard of Natural Bridge; far few of Natural Tunnel. I would almost think this more amazing than the bridge, for it is much deeper - and trains still run through it!
As most mention, it is a downhill hike and it is strenuous coming back up, but I walk with a cane in one hand, dog in the other and we made it fine, albeit a little winded. (Ok, so a little extra weight on me has a hand in that). There's a chairlift operational on weekends but we were there on a Wednesday - and frankly, would've likely hiked it anyway.
I desperately wanted to see a train pass through, but couldn't sit and wait - and there is no set schedule - they are coal trains and come through as loads dictate.
There's even a great spot for picnicing or a small gathering right in front of the tunnel. Pictures don't do it justice... unless you see one with a diesel locomotive underneath! Enjoy

My lady, our dog & I opted to have a look see at the Natural Tunnel State Park while in the area. Just off US highway 20, the $5 per vehicle parking fee was fair….However….the chair lift (more on that later) was only operational on weekends and when we visited the Visitor Center was closed on the Tuesday we visited. But the restrooms were open and clean.
There are two trails departing the closed visitors center. To the left is a 0.1 mile trek to the 1st part of Lover’s Leap overlook. Too the right was a 0.27 hike down to the namesake Natural Tunnel. My lady said we needed to take this one….much to her chagrin later.
This switch back path meandered steeply down thru the woods utilizing steps to traverse the descending hillside. The midpoint of our hike offered us views of the natural tunnel with operational railway running thru. Quite a sight.
But the fun was getting back up that damn hill. I greatly appreciated the thoughtfully placed bench’s alone the trail and gladly made use of them. After 175 stair steps later we again gained high ground and thankfully the comfort of air conditioned vehicle.
My dog wanted to bite me but was too tired and my GF was huffing and puffing too much to say much.
Visit on weekend - get your steps in going down and ride chairlift back up.

I had never been to this park and had wanted to see it for years. I finally got the chance to get to this park and it was worth the drive. The hike down to the viewing area is strenuous when coming back up. They have a chairlift for a small fee and if I get back then I will use it.
The only drawback is that you cannot walk through the actual tunnel.

What a well kept secret! This beautiful place has a great hike down to it and around it as well from the camping area. Awesome views at the top of the upper trail. In December, there is a tram that takes you down to the boardwalk along a stream exiting the natural tunnel. If you time it right, you can watch trains still coming thru the tunnel. Christmas is most awesome because they have a wonderful event along the boardwalk at the entrance to the tunnel - great family thing to do for all ages. There is also a historic cabin to visit with a moderator. Put this at the top of your list.

The Natural Tunnel is really a great park to camp or even for a day trip. I visited with a motorcycle touring group and we were able to see the tunnel and have a picnic lunch at the upper part of the park (where the gondola begins).
The park does seem to need some maintenance as the stone patio around the look out points were cracking and needed repairs as did the picnic tables off the parking area.
What was also disappointing is the gondola was not operational and we were told it wasn't yet the 'season'. However, in the Virginia website for parks it stated the season from from 'April through October' and we were there April 15th. We had a few people that could not walk the steps down due to health reasons so that was a disappointment.
otherwise definitely worth the trip.

How much time needs to be allotted for this attraction? We were going here and the country music museum in Bristol the same day. Is that possible?

I have a camping reservation for Cove View. Where do I check in?
撰写日期:2019年10月9日
If the park office is open, check in there, If not, proceed to the campground.

What is the distance from parking lot to the high pount where you have the Christmas Star. We walked it yesterday and enjoyed every minute. We are so proud of ourselves at almost 72 and 89. Thank you. Spectacular. Trip.

So the chair lift only runs on Saturday and Sunday after Labor day or on Friday too. Planning to visit September 28 on Friday.
撰写日期:2018年3月30日
The lift runs seven days a week from Memorial Day weekend through Labor Day weekend. It also runs on weekends from the first weekend in May through the last full weekend of October. Weekend means Saturday and Sunday. Consider staying fit the weekend and renting one of the beautiful cabins there.

It is seasonal The lift runs seven days a week from Memorial Day weekend through Labor Day weekend. It also runs on weekends from the first weekend in May through the last full weekend of October. We also do some special programs in the evenings other times of the year, most notably the Lighting of the Tunnel programs around Christmas.

Audrey’s answer is correct. The lift works down to the tunnel and back up and you can take it one way or round trip. It is open seasonally so check with the park before making plans that depend on the chairlift. The park does offer special events like for the holidays that open the lift outside its normal season.

Is it ok to put a tent on an EW (electric/water) site.... i reserved a site at the cove view and I have a tent . Just wondering if it is gonna work....
撰写日期:2017年8月5日
Yes! All the sites have electric and water. We found some time ago that our tent campers like those amenities too and we don't have enough camping sites to offer separate tent and RV campgrounds in most of our parks.
