I will admit as I approached the place it was a little scary. In the middle of no where, no people, leaning barns and old farm equipment. The tasting room was small with a rugged feel. It was also dark and locked. Since it was just then opening time I hung out for a few minutes with the bumblebees. Then slowly walked to my car. As I was putting the next address into GPS a car arrived. I ask if he was opening the room. He was. He was the owner and was very nice. We chatted as I did my tasting. They are almost out of wine and only had three left to taste, two white and a blackberry. The first was a chardonnay. The second a Sauv Blanc. It was light and nice. I ended up buying a bottle. Finally the blackberry. That was a no for me.

Awesome gem of a winery, it is a step back in time to the roots of the Virginia Wine industry, before corporate wineries became the norm. The Owner was personable and the tasting was the best we have had since the pandemic. Wine was good and very reasonably priced. There is a good hike next to the winery… I highly encourage visiting both.

Did a strenuous 5 mile hike and promptly came here for wine and lunch (from Subway in Lovingston!). There’s a good variety to try, and the view and the breeze made it a perfect cool down spot. Went home with a bottle.

So it seems like you are driving to nowhere when you make it to Mountain Cove Vineyards which is a farm winery. When you get there, you approach the salesroom where there is a sign that says call a number and they will come down to do the tasting. The owner is an older gentleman who was incredibly gracious and knowledgeable about the wine industry in VA. Mountain Cove is the oldest winery in Va and make a selection of white and red wines as well as fruit wines. There were two dry wines (a red and a white), two semi-dry wines (a rose and a white) and two fruit wines (blackberry and apple). None of the wines were to my taste and I lucked out that the tasting was free. It was a nice time.

Really nice server with free tasting of not so great wines, but if you want a setting to remember it may be worth the drive.

Was there in early April. Owner conducted the wine tasting, very friendly gentleman! Wine was good; setting was lovely. Worth the trip!

We really enjoyed our trip to Mountain Cove. Our pourer was extremely friendly and knowledgeable, and we had a great conversation. The wines were tasty, and it was interesting to learn more about vegan wine. Definitely recommend a visit.

This place is beautiful and the wine is divine! We were greeted at the door and made feel very welcome. Learned a little about the vineyard and the wine. A free tasting of 6 different wines had us leaving with 3 bottles 😉

We had arrived early at our B&B and the owner suggested we try a nearby winery to try. The original location was closed, but we noticed a sign to "visit our neighbors at Mountain Cove." So we did. The directions are clear and the road narrows as you go. The scenery is very nice in the valley with the trees still having color. The side road to the winery is pretty rough, not for low slung cars, we took it slow and side-stepped to miss most of the rocks. We parked and stepped out the first thing I noticed was the silence of the valley...no noise at all! I then heard a murmur from the tasting house so we made our way there. The owner, Al Weed, was offering a tasting for no charge to a father and son also visiting. Al was very friendly, explaining his operation as the oldest operating winery in Virginia. He had been there 40+ years! His wines were very good, enough so that we bought some. He also offers a military discount. I sat on the porch just to enjoy the quiet of the valley. It was worth the detour!
