Beautiful historic battlefield with great trails. Interesting facts throughout the trail system. Many different trail length options for a walking tour. They have a one way driving tour that would be nice. Small visitor center with some exhibits that were informative. A lot of interesting books for sale that I would have loved to have. (flying home limits my book hauling options) Super friendly ranger gave us maps and information. Highly recommend.

The site of Union Gen. Grant’s biggest error, you can see earthworks through the preserved portion of the park as well as in surrounding fields

This is the site of the 1862 & 1864 battles & part of the Richmond battlefueld park system. We had some union & confederate family history. The ranger spent almost 2 hours with us going over regiment histories & troop rosters. He provided more details than we had in old diaries. This park is small, there is a short drive, and also two walking trails.
Take time to visit with the ranger. He is a history major & has extensive knowledge of all the Virginia penenisula campaigns.

Cold Harbor Battlefield is part of Richmond National Battlefield Park. It's a short drive from the city of Richmond. There is a visitor center located at the park. There is a short driving tour, with about five or six total stops. The tour takes about 10 minutes total. There's not a lot to see, but it's worth the few minutes it takes to drive the loop. For those looking to spend a little more time at the site, there are also walking trails.

Cold Harbor was an epic battle during Grant’s Overland Campaign where for two weeks Union forces battle determined, entrenched Confederate forces under Lee, suffering great casualties while making no significant progress. The battle convinced Grant that a direct attack on Richmond would be very difficult and result in unacceptable losses causing him to pivot towards Petersburg realizing that if Petersburg fell, Richmond would fall soon afterwards.
Given the size and significance of the battle, I expected much more of the park than a small visitor center, mostly closed due to COVID, a short 1 mile (1.6k) driving tour with four stops, limited interpretation and one monument. The most significant feature from a historical point of view in my opinion are the relatively well-preserved Union and Confederate earthworks which are amazingly close to one another in places.
The park does offer several shady, pet-friendly trails that are probably great places for the residents of the adjacent up-scale neighborhood to walk one’s dog, jog or just take a leisurely stroll.

This small to medium size park has a lot of history and there are several historical markers along the trails. But the big draw is the hiking trails and friendly people you will meet. We did not feel uncomfortable in the park. There are a lot of people and friendly dogs around and there are facilities open most days.

We enjoyed visiting here very much. The building/visitor center itself was closed (Covid) but the ranger stood outside and told us all about the area. We then were able to take the short 1.2 mile drive through the battlefield. Just the right amount of information for us. No gift store here.

Wonderful, treed walking paths for anyone but especially dog walkers.
Well thought out and history comes alive. Worth a visit on a beautiful day.

Quick stop if you don't hike. Good hiking trails if you do. You get an impactful sense of the war when you see how close the two sides were.

So when I finally got to the visitor center after stopping at the Garthright House and the cemetery, I made my way to the Cold Harbor Visitor center. There is a decent sized parking lot there and some information signs. I looked at these first and then tried to enter the Visitor Center. It was closed. I tried to call the number on the sign to find out why, but the number didn't work. I then called the number in the NPS brochure and talked to a very nice man. The Visitor Center was closed due to power outages in the area that were affecting them. He gave me info over the phone about the hiking trails and the one-way road that goes through the park (and I told him about the phone number issue; if in doubt just look in the brochure for their number). As it was super cold and windy, I opted to just do the drive through the battlefield. There were three stops with signs about the battle and troop movements. It was very well done and informative.

I see the visitor center is closed on Monday’s and Tuesday’s - can you still visit the battlefield and do the self guided tour or walk even if it is closed on those 2 days?
