A tour of the weavers with their looms and the quality of the fabric are the highlights of REWA. If you want to buy, the choice here is limited, but you can be assured of the quality.

Rehwa society was found in the 1970’s to support local weavers and sustain their craft. It has grown and now supports many weavers and provides not only an outlet for their work but a chance for the rest of us to own a piece of these beautiful Maheshwari textiles. You can tour through the production area (though most weavers work from home) and see the weavers in action. It is a precise and demanding type of work with incredibly beautiful results. Shopping here supports the work of the foundation, the weavers and ensures the future of this amazing craft. Everyone was very friendly and we enjoyed our visit immensely.

Maheshwar is a small town in Madhya Pradesh India but is big destination on tourism map. It’s well known for the famous Ahilya Fort, Ghats and ancient Temples on the bank of Narmada. The town was the capital of the Holkar state. Ahilya bai the famous warrior queen of the Holkar state, made Maheshwar Her Capital by moving from Indore. Her rule was just and happy for her subjects. She spent money for renovation of Temples and Inns building of highways and other projects for the good of people. She her self led a very frugal and pious life.
She invited lot of weavers from all over India with a view to give them employment. Thus was born the now world famous Maheshwari Saree. That was over two hundred years back.
In late 20th century the condition of weavers in Maheshwar declined. Richard Holkar, the Son of Yeshwantrao Holkar - the last Maharaja of the Holkar clan and his American Wife - took up the cause of the weavers. He helped them form a cooperative society for themselves which helps them market the Maheshwari Sarees all over the world. It’s a cooperative society of 68 weavers and 40 other staff who work for their own betterment and keeping the weaving tradition of Maheshwar alive. Tourists from all over the world, who visit Maheshwar also visit Rehwa society - a remarkable non profit NGO..

This place is where the age old tradition of khaddi or manual looms are still surviving and newer people are taught by society. Little pricey but then it is hand made and laborious .

It is situated in the fort itself and the weaving techniques are very interesting. You can also buy some of their nice products and contribute to a good scheme. But there are hand looms throughout entire Maheshwar and the people do not mind your watching them how they work.

I loved their work as they are doing traditional work of Maheshwar. It is best place to buy Maheshwari sarees . These are authentic and handwoven.

This is the cooperative started by the ruler and still managed by them giving employment to the local artisans. The duppatas and the sarees are just superb. They are expensive compared to the other shops outside the fort but the quality of the fabric, designs and the weaving is much better. strongly recommend buying from here if you are visiting Maheshwar.

If one wants to buy the Best Maheshwari without a doubt this is the Place. They might not drape it for you neither display it as the other shops do but mind it.... the thread/ the weave is Genuine.
Good Saree's range somewhere above ₹ 3500/- and on my yesterday's visit the best one was a pure silk red Maheshwari with owesome zari work for ₹31000/-
The traditional Maheshwar Fort Rock sculpture designs were all intricately put by the weavers, and definitely these weavers r the best avlb in Maheshwar.
Time to shop:10am–6pm but it's recommended that one needs to be there well before 5pm so that one has a good feel n time to see options.... the looms people work till its almost 545pm so if one wants to witness it, take due time consideration for the same.
This Rehwa Society is a not-for-profit foundation, working with weavers in Maheshwar founded by the Holkars + Established in 1979 attempts to revive this royal handloom weaving craft is a true charm of Maheshwar.

This is the best place to buy Maheshwari print cottons. More so because they empower women. This was my second visit. I learned that most of their employees have some kind of weaving loom at home as well and the entire family's income is based on it. I think it is awesome.

The history and the establishment of Rehta society have got a star - else would have ranked terrible. Go to the town centre at places like Pawar's or Tana bana (or the line of shops there) to get similar quality sarees and material at much lower prices. Those places also support local weavers but not at the cost of exploiting customers.
