Great place to walk around with plenty of wildlife to be seen, some views require a decent lens for bird photography. Friendly little shop serving coffee and cold drinks

The parking machines don't take cash but I asked at the visitor centre if I could pay them cash to park and was told that I could. I am pleased therefore that there is this choice.

Visited for the first time with friends on a very wet day. Staff were very friendly and helpful. Good facilities in the visitor centre and they provided a paper map. However the map wasn't much help when on the reserve as there were very few signs and no indication either on the map or on the reserve how far anything was. With limited time and pouring rain, what we thought was a small reserve grew into something larger. We never found half of the hides. More and better signage definitely required. Having said that, I will go back.

Hi Karen, Thank you for your review of RSPB Fairburn Ings. We would love to hear your opinion on where we should put some additional signage so please do email us at fairburnings@rspb.org.uk and we can see what we can do!
We love how large an area Fairburn Ings covers and the large range of wildlife that it can support as a result, but understand that when you have time limits that can be a limitation which is why we have put approximate times for each walk on the map.
Please do also email us to let us know how we can improve your visit to a five star one as we hope that everyone who visits has a five star experience. - Peggy

Beautiful place with plenty to see and walk around. Shame the shop has downsized considerably since our last visit, but the seating space is still a nice addition.

Hi Pete, Thank you for such a lovely review of RSPB Fairburn Ings! It's great to hear that you managed to spot plenty of wildlife on the reserve. We think that while the shop is only a small section of the Visitor Centre, our excellent Retail Team are brilliant at fitting in a wide range of things to buy from bird food and books to binoculars and tea towels! - Peggy

A lovely site to visit with really helpful staff to point us to the best walks and hides. Plenty of parking, which was free for members. Good shop and coffees available.

We went after ages of wanting to go, lovely area, but far too many dog walkers with dogs all off their leads, needless to say not much wildlife to be seen especially birds. It's nesting season soon and It would be better if no dogs allowed here or especially between April and August. Also people being far too noisy at the kingfisher viewing area, so never saw anything sadly. However there was a lovely well kept bird feeding station near the shop with lots of tame robin's, dunnocks and other tame birds hanging around, and the lakes are lovely with lots of swans and other water fowl birds and got some lovely photos. It just spoilt it for us with all the dogs, there's loads of other places to walk nearby for them!

This is the reserve that got me into Birdwatching, back when parts of it was still a working open-cast coal mine. It is quite a vast area with mostly free access, though there is a charge for parking in the main car park at the visitor centre. Free parking can had in the small car park at Lin Dike (western end of the reserve), and a few small parking spaces at Cut Lane in the Fairburn village (east). We (me & Our Lass) usually stick to the Lin Dike area where we can regularly see all three of the white egret species, plus Spoonbills. New and Spoonbill flashes are good places to look for waders, and both almost always hold a profusion of wildfowl. The main car park gives access to the Coal Pits Trail, an elevated circular route that gives extensive views over a wide area, including most of the pools and flashes. Bittern is regularly seen in the reedbeds that surround the pools on this trail. We also see deer regularly while birdwatching on this reserve. Apart from birds, wildflowers proliferate during the spring and summer months, so it is an ideal place for enthusiastic botanists. The only downside to the reserve is the infestation of cyclists since the Covid lockdown, who seem to take great delight in using the narrowest of the footpaths where there is only room to walk one abreast, let alone cycle; and dog walkers who refuse to clean-up after their dogs.

Came for the butterflies only to find that for contamination reasons we were not allowed our own butterfly nets. They do hire nets at £3 a pop but more suited to their purpose, which is to use in the ponds.
The ponds had some fairly tame ducks and moorhens and the sieving and netting kept the grandkids amused for a good while. Plenty of dragonflies.
This was situated in their discovery area aimed at children but with a bird hide on the circular route.
The other walks were mainly along the length of the reserve and you would need to double back having reached the end of them. Another route did have a loop within the walk but we didn't have time to venture onto that one.
Butterfly wise it was pretty disappointing. Plenty of Speckled Woods, a single Comma, a probable Meadow Brown and the usual Small Whites.
The nets were not at all useful although we did manage to catch one Speckled Wood somehow. No Brown Argus that we had hoped to see.
Overall, a little unremarkable but we didn't manage all the walk routes but with good parking, good amenities and very enthusiastic, helpful staff members onsite.

Hello Stephen B thank you for taking the time to write us a review. As RSPB Fairburn Ings is a SSSI site, we try to keep contamination to a minimum which is why we recommend hiring our nets for Pond Dipping activities. It may be helpful to note that we spend 90% of net income on conservation, public education and advocacy and with that, we thank you for your support and for taking the time to write your review.

Hi Rachlally, a hot chocolate costs £2 from our machine, or if you bring your own cup you get 20p off. Thanks.

Hi there, as CaptainWestYorkshire has said unfortunately we can't allow dogs in our centre as it is quite small. We do have picnic benches and also a small balcony with seating where dogs are allowed. Best wishes.

Hi,
You can fish from the numbered fishing pegs down Cut Lane, however you need to be a member of the Aire Valley Pike Anglers Club (Aire Valley PAC on Facebook)
I hope this helps!

The Rspb may not be the cheapest but profits from all goods go into conservation and not some fat company executives pocket

I know that but reduce the price and sell more product. I worked for British rail in the early 80's when they reduced all single fares for pensioners to £1, they had to put on extra trains to deal with the demand, and the only month ever that they made a profit. Same principle. I love the RSPB and have supported and been a member for 20 years
