Nice place, run down but that may just be time of the year. 1-2 hrs trip , so many nice little gardens to browse and may be sit down for a relaxing time.Ample parking, easy access, right next to junction 25.

Not worth the petrol money
Surrounded by motorways and pollution in an awful part of the backwaters of London
I can think of better places

Beautiful venue!

The garden is absolutely beautiful! We had our Civil Ceremony in the chapel ruins and it was magical. The staff where very friendly and accommodating throughout the whole process. There are lots of beautiful spots for photos which we used for our photoshoot.
Definitely recommend the Capel Manor Gardens as a beautiful outdoor venue!

A great excursion in Enfield
A great outdoor area in Enfield. 10min drive from Enfield Town. Admission is £7. There's loads to see and do- the creatures, the holly maze, multiple floral gardens, the lake. There is a free car park and a canteen.

Unforgettable wedding! As beautiful as images may seem it still doesn't fully show how beautiful it is in person!
Staff are a delight to work with, very friendly and co-operative!

A pleasant place to spend the afternoon, but could do with some rethinking
It's a great place to wander round for some gentle, fairly low-key enjoyment. As other reviewers have noted, the place feels a bit as if it is just ticking over, with just enough maintenance to keep it going. There's no sense of enterprise, in a non-commercial sense. That's to say, there are a series of former show gardens, but even the idea of that is oxymoronic: a show garden is preened and primped and is the result of a ridiculous amount of work to get it to peak condition. Here, the show gardens are, in truth, relics of former glory. At least, I hope they are. It would take a massive team to do round the clock work to keep so many show gardens in top condition. The show gardens also, illuminated something that had disquieted me watching The Great Northern Garden Build, that is, the making of RHS Bridgewater. Bridgewater appears to be 50% concrete paths and 50% beds, rather like being in a supermarket car park I thought. The best bits of Capel Manor, similarly, are not the concrete-path show gardens, but the lovely Manor garden and the trials beds, despite the roar of the M25. In other words, green places. The formal garden is lovely too, near the manor house itself. Capel Manor gardens, in my opinion, needs a rethink? Is there much point in keeping the layouts of former show gardens? Wouldn't that entire area be better configured as what stately home gardens do best, that is, a long double herbaceous border with a lawn in the middle? All in all, it feels as if it is trying to serve too many masters. On paper, it sounds fantastic, but in reality it feels like resources being spread very thinly. The trials beds are fascinating, by the way, lots of great horticultal interest there, and they are being actively gardened, not just maintained. You'll find members of staff there, who are very well informed and happy to explain what they are doing, top marks on that score. Lastly, my fantasy redesign for Capel Manor would involved massively expanding the areas for the animal cages in the zoo. They are currently very small and that just feels sad. Goldings Hill Park zoo, for example, has far bigger enclosures, by at least a factor of four in area terms. The zoo at Capel Manor feels cramped and the animals don't look too thrilled. But do visit, I've given the place 4 stars, and that would include the alpacas, sheep and ornamental lake with ridiculously huge and uber-friendly carp, virtually jumping out of the water to be fed. Also, one thing that's important to say, we visited in late August, so many flowers are anyway past their best. Ah yes, one final comment, the snaking pond leading up to the larger pond in the old manor garden area is an absolute delight with its pretty gravel bed and banks of mimulus.

A beautiful area in the past, but I was sad to see so many of the show gardens in such a poor state, covered in bindweed, with water features not working. We had a good walk around it, but many of the plants have not been watered despite the rain, and were wilting. Even the pond was covered in green algae and looked awful, all the plants, or most of them, needed attention. What a pity. However, the garden with all the follies was delightful. Sorry to say the café was as awful as it always was. Please please don’t ever have a “meal” there, bring a picnic, then you won’t be disappointed.

Decayed grandeur

After looking forward to visiting for a long time we were so disappointed.

The garden has fantastic bones and structure at its heart but unfortunately it’s been so poorly maintained lately. Everything currently seems overgrown and generally unloved. I’m assuming this is because of what we’ve all been through over the last year or so.

Hopefully they can wrangle it all back into shape with the help of a new influx of students come autumn.

Such a shame.

We hired out a part of the gardens for a memorial reception and the events coordinator was brilliant. Excellent communication which was highly reassuring. The grounds are as beautiful as I remembered. Our small group was all very pleased with the picturesque setting and the helpful signs to direct them to the right part of the gardens. The parking was good too. A brilliant and stress-free place to book an event.

A wonderful day out at a diverse and inspiring gardens
A superb range of gardens, designs, plants and vistas. We visited as a family with two adult children, and all thought that Capel Manor Gardens was one of the best gardens we have ever visited. The imagination and variety of the different gardens meant that one could easily spend a whole day here. The indoor glasshouse with cacti and tropical plants was particularly impressive and we all loved the maze.
We live close to Sissinghurst Castle Garden, and are regular visitors to National Garden Scheme open gardens and members,of Great Dixter. Capel Manor Gardens is easily as good as these big hittters, and a credit to the students at the college and the staff who teach them. There were lovely little extras- the meerkats, the python and the crocodile, as well as an unexpected view into a room filled with burnished leather saddles. The garden felt part of a real working college and had a sense of evolving and growing rather than being stuck in time. It’s impossible in a short review to convey how special these gardens are. We are looking forward very much to returning again later this year.
Parking was easy and the gardens are well signposted. Reception staff were friendly and helpful and we were very pleased with the range of plants for sale, all at reasonable prices. We had lunch at the restaurant- the food was very good, catering for vegan and vegetarians in our family. Restaurant staff were also cheerful and friendly. The prices were reasonable and the variety was good.
All in all we had a really lovely day and feel so very glad to have visited.
