Queen Victoria Would Have Been Impressed

This impressive clocktower made of white Portland stone was built by a public subscription of £ 1,097 in 1887 to commemorate Queen Victoria’s Golden Jubilee (50 years). It’s over 50 feet (18 m) tall and the clock faces are based on the design of Big Ben built 40 years’ earlier. It has a head and shoulders profile of the queen carved at the base.

Unfortunately, the busy ‘centre’ of the town where the clock tower was originally placed has moved further up along King Street and New Road due to development, so it now stands rather forlornly at the ‘quiet end’ of town, away from the tourist trail, in the middle of the road with busy traffic either side. It’s located at the end of Harmer Street which at the time of building was a very elegant up and coming area which included the Grand Theatre (now rebuilt as the ‘Call Boy’ pub).

Queen Victoria seems to have been quite popular hereabouts. There are two other monuments to her in Gravesend – a statue in Darnley Road outside the further education college and another just inside Gravesend market at the Queen Street end.

Just been renovated

This tall monument has recently been cleaned and renovated, but it sits amongst much passing traffic and in an area of town that is a bit down-market. It's interesting to view it, but little else can be said about it. Perhaps the council should have been grave and moved it to a better location?

Nice clock, shame about the location

Typical of vintage seaside clock towers and a pretty example, but these days it sits in in a pretty depressed and scruffy area, so not really on the tourist trail unless you have a burning interest in such things

Nothing to see other than hookers touting for trade and beggars

Don't waste your time unless you like being pestered by junkies begging for money or very young east European hookers. A bleak monument in a bleak part of town.
