(Faversham to Whitstable)

We walked a section of the Saxon Shoreway between Faversham and Whitstable on a mid-week day in April. We started our walk at Faversham railway station and finished at Whitstable railway station a distance of about ten miles.
The walk ‘proper’ starts at Faversham’s ‘Standard Quay’ and it is possible to get refreshments here if required and also make use of the public toilets before setting out (the next ones are at Seasalter).
Leaving Standard Quay, the path passes through a boat yard with an eclectic mix of nautical craft in various stages of restoration. The trail then follows the creek and if you keep this to your left you can’t go far wrong, looking back it is possible to see the spire of the abbey church in Faversham receding behind you. The route is signposted ‘Saxon Shoreway’ and after a while passes some large houses then goes through some flat farmland in which on the day of our visit, skylarks sang merrily in the sky. The trail eventually comes to a seawall marking the southern bank of the river Swale and from here the walk to Whitstable will follow this river before it in turn joins the Thames Estuary. The walk along the sea wall is on an elevated grass bank and passes through small fields in which sheep were grazing on the day of our visit. The footpath passes through a series of ‘kissing’ gates in this area to contain the livestock. Looking out towards the Isle of Sheppey, the tide being out had uncovered extensive mud flats and wading birds were making the most of the opportunity before the tide returned.
We had originally intended to get a refreshment stop at ‘The Sportsman’ public house near Seasalter but when we arrived here a message in the entrance stated that access was only permitted for pre booked diners and that the bar was not available, so we continued on. We eventually had our refreshment stop in the ‘Forget Me Not’ café near to the caravan park in Seasalter, there is car parking here and public toilets may also be found in the area as well if required.
After the caravan park, the footpath peters out and the walker can chose to continue on the road through some houses but with no pavements, or as we did, descend onto a grass path on the opposite side of the road to the coast. This path re-joins the road bypassing the housing development and from here the walker may access the beach and find a concrete promenade which takes you along the coast until it ends leading to a walk directly along the shingly beach. We continued along the beach past some colourful beach huts until reaching a concrete promenade once more after a caravan park.
The walk now continues into Whitstable passing the house once inhabited by actor Peter Cushing, and if you are looking for the refreshment at this stage, the picturesque ‘Old Neptune’ public house on the beach makes for a welcome pit stop. We continued on to the attractive little harbour at Whitstable with its colourful fishing boats before getting a cup of tea in the castle gardens. Public toilets are available in the harbour area if you need them. We ended our walk at Whitstable railway station, which can be reached from the harbour area via ‘Cromwell Street’ and ‘Stream Walk’ and then along a narrow footpath brightly decorated with colourful murals.
An interesting walk which for long sections passes though farmland, then along coastal mudflats and shoreline depending on the state of the tide. After leaving Faversham and before reaching Seasalter we did not see too many other walkers and no cyclists so if you like pure scenery and nature and don’t mind the solitude this walk is for you. After Seasalter the walk passes through more populated areas until reaching the harbour town of Whitstable with its oyster fishing industry and there is much to see and enjoy in the harbour area itself. The walking surface varies from compresses earth, grassy paths, concrete promenades and shingle beaches (though you can bypass these if you move inshore).

We have walked various stages of the 160 mile plus Saxon Shoreway, Gravesend to Higham, Reculver to Herne Bay, and various stretches from Ramsgate to Folkestone. Mostly very easy walking with lots to see all around. For those interested in nature there is lots of bird life to see in a variety of settings. For those interested in history there are a large number of forts spread out along the coast going as far back as roman times through to those of more modern times. We hope eventually to walk the whole route albeit in stages.

We walked a section of the Saxon Shoreway between Herne Bay and Reculver and back on a mid-week day in July. We both started and finished our walk in Herne Bay walking the section as an ‘out and back’ exercise.
Staring at Herne Bay Pier, we followed the promenade past the Central Bandstand and East cliff bay toward the distant towers of Reculver church. On the way we passed the statues of Amy Johnson and Barnes Wallis, the imposing clock tower and an attractive terrace of Georgian houses looking very smart.
The trail then heads away from the town along quiet shingle beaches but with a good concrete promenade giving a good walking surface. As you proceed, the Reculver ruins gradually disappear behind the looming Bishopstone Cliffs.
Just before you reach the Bishopstone Cliffs, the walker has options, the first being to take the tarmac ramp up to Reculver Drive (which we did on the outward leg), or continue along the promenade to a set of steps which takes you directly up to Bishopstone cliffs (which route we took on the return leg).
Ascending the tarmac ramp the route takes a winding path through the trees before joining Bishopstone Glen, and we followed this to Manor Road passing the Bishopstone Fairy woods in the trees to your left. At the end of manor road there is a footpath which takes you to the cliff edge but we continued along Haven Drive before turning left into Bishopstone Lane. At the end of Bishopstone lane you will find yourself on an expansive wildflower meadow and here we found skylarks joyfully giving out their song on the wing above us. From here the path leads to Reculver and we got some lovely views of the church ruins from an elevated viewpoint as we approached.
On our return journey we took a different route via the cliff edge footpath which bypassed the hosing estate we walked through earlier and brought us back to the promenade via a set of steps.
A nice coastal walk of just under 4 miles in either direction mostly with a good walking surface though there is some field walking over Bishopstone cliffs and this section also has some hilly sections in what otherwise is a mostly flat walk. Fairly easy to follow in that it is a coastal walk, we didn’t experience too many problems following the route. Public toilets are available in Herne Bay and Reculver

This is one path that is relatively strait forward. Flat for most of it. Reasonable signposted on the rural sections but lacks it in the urban areas. This is more noticeable in the northern reaches. Once you get into any larger towns you can pretty much forget signage. Having said that if you have the more modern form of navigation it can be done ok. A good if long walk taken in stages or in one go. Another point to take on board there is very little accommodation along many of the rural sections therefore you may want to carry a tent. Even so there is also a decidedly lack of camping sites.Like me it was wild camping only.

The Saxon Shore Way goes for more than 160 miles from Gravesend, right round the coast of Kent to Hastings. You would think that it would get a bit "samey" after a while, but it doesn't .. some of it is inland! And the Thames estuary, the North Kent Coast, Sandwich and Deal, Dungeness and Hastings could not be more different. Kent is a fine county for walking and this on is pretty flat, few stiles, fine views .. lots to recommend it.
The centre of Gravesend, where the walk starts, is fine. Some of the first mile or so is nice, but some is rather dire riverside factories and warehouses. However after that things brighten up considerably, and a walk from Gravesend to Shorncliffe Fort and back is a fine 6 mile round trip in reasonable weather. Don't miss the Ship & Lobster, a friendly and welcoming old-fashioned pub. Or for a circular walk, go inland from the fort and back to Gravesend alongside the disused canal.
If you are interested in walking some or all of the Saxon Shore Way look up the Linton Walkers, (just google it) who will be doing the whole thing in a long series of circular walks stretching over several years starting in March 2019. Email the organiser for details of where they are up to, and just join in any walk ..

Close to where I live, a great shore to walk, collect objects like small pieces of driftwood etc. from the beach...and even pick up litter left by others or washed up by the river.

There are problems especially around the Denton area where there is no access to the shore. However this path parses through Gravesham and is easy to follow and takes in lots of historical places. Also some places of beauty and space. Use it if you have toime.

A really interesting historical walk with much to see and do along the way. Great views as we walk along the river Thames and a lot of shipping activity to watch.

A lovely walk along the river Thames. So far I have only walked a short part of the Way in Gravesend but the promenade there is lovely. It's a great place to sit and watch the boats and is a short walk from a beautifully kept park, the fort which I believe is sometimes open to visitors for tours, the chantry museum, a cafe and several lovely pubs. The green space and the park are great for children and there is plenty of play equipment for both younger and older children with outdoor gym equipment and basketball hoops.
