My guide was Michelle who was very knowledgable of the coal mine and the history surrounding it. I knew very little about coal before I went there. However, I learned so much in this tour such as the veins of this mine run across several states, it helped us during the world wars, the explosion that happened, and about the petrified wood inside the mine. This mine is over 10 feet tall so never had to duck. It is a walking tour however I'm sure a wheelchair could easily go through. Bring a sweater it gets a little chilly. I am glad I went to check it out. She even suggested I check out the town where the owners/millionaires lived. What a stark difference in the two towns. Highly recommend this tour.

A nice small exhibit on the history of Bramwell WV and it's heritage. Many of the individuals and families that were key to WV coal mining once resided in the town.

Take a walk around the central position of Bramwell center and see many of the historic homes and architecture from the coal boom era.

We spent about an hour and a half and it was so interesting! Our tour guide was very informative and the mine is amazing to see. Bring a jacket and wear shoes, not flip-flops as it is very chilly in the mine!

Guide and storyteller Michele C. Crigger made this a vivid and intriguing experience. She relayed details of the lives of the mining families who made this place their boomtown home of the 1880s until the mine closed in the 1950s. Particularly poignant was the story of the coffin maker in the town who was ordered to stop work after a mine explosion occurred about 1885. As the bodies (over 140) were removed after a month under ground, the company had no need for individual coffins. Bodies and parts of bodies were buried in a mass grave in the local cemetery on the hill above this ghost town. From the tales of the rough and tumble coal mining life, to the occasional fossil of prehistoric fish still visible in the coal face, Michele made this a must see experience from America's industrial past.

This newly updated exhibition coal mine should be open in the Spring of 2020. The town is also working on opening a museum and restaurant in the same area. This should be great. The old mine was very interesting, but needed modernizing. Be sure to wear a jacket. This is a real mine, and cold inside.

Although the exhibit and tour was closed for the season we enjoyed the scenic ride up and around the mountain from Bluefield to get here. We laughed as we exited and entered Va and W. Va several times.
We took some nice pics and looked around at the old machinery and coal piles laying around. My kids had fun. I hope to visit again during tour season.
The area around the mine is pretty interesting... it looks like poverty is pretty high. Kinda sad.

As a historian studying Appalachian mining communities, I was interested in visiting this mine. However, some of the information relayed during the tour of the mine was inaccurate and incorrect. The museum portion is in complete disarray, which is really unfortunate, because it has a lot of interesting materials. The documents, photographs, and books were fascinating and definitely worth a look at.

Easy stroll, very informative. The ladies working there are very nice and friendly. $10 for the tour. It's well worth the price.

I visited the mine, but never went into it. I talked to local council member, and she became interested in learning more about him, and where he was buried. But she couldn't find the burial site after conducting searches for days. I obtained his death certificate, and found that he was killed by a coal car which was let go down into the mine without control. My uncle was killed by the moving car inside the mine, according to the death certificate. It was never determined who let go of the car above.
