My wife and I just completed this hike. The trail head is roughly 90 minutes outside of DC and the hike itself is approximately 3.5 hours. A couple of lessons learned for readers: (1) the trail difficulty is marked as moderate on some portals. It is not. It is very challenging and not for people in poor physical condition or not accustomed to strenuous activity. We are in our early 60s and are very healthy, however the trail proved difficult for my wife. We completed the hike but only after several breaks and much soul searching (including reminding my wife that I would not be able to carry her out). (2) The trail is open to pets, however I recommend you leave yours at home. Lots of climbing, sharp rocks, etc. it is not ideal for fido. (3) Like others I recommend taking the climb up followed by the service road on the way down. The elevation change (per my apple watch) is 1500 feet. Be aware, when you reach the "summit" (around 2.5 miles into the hike) you have the option of taking the service road down or continuing on the blue hiking trail. The former ends up in as a 6 mile hike, the latter looks to be 12 miles +/-. If you are not paying attention you could easily keep going on the blue trail and be in for a very long hike. Lastly, take lots of water and snacks and wear hiking boots vs athletic shoes. Overall this is a great hike which is enhanced with good preparation and properly set expectations. cw

A fun and delightful challenge! We didn’t have a guide so ended up ascending and descending the rocks. Hiking sticks recommended for the numerous water crossings.

Absolutely gorgeous setting. The first two miles of this hike are no joke and strenuous. It’s like the FLOOR IS LAVA in the woods. Lots of rocky climbs and river crossings. Beautiful creek and some small falls. About a mile in you get massive rock walls. Very pretty. The last 3 miles of the 5 mile loop are a walk on a gravel road. That is when I recovered.

We did this hike going up the stairs first, which is definitely the way to do it. It would have been hard on the knees & back to have to come down. The stairs are the best part, the rest of the hike is on an old fire road.

We took the fire road up to the top to avoid the most difficult part of the trail. About 7 miles r/t and it was easy to hike and decent elevation.

This was a quiet trail with well blazed carved steps climbing steeply through beautiful woodlands. We didn't encounter a single person in our 5 hour loop.

Very challenging trail but well worth it! Ensure you travel this circuit in counter-clockwise (up the "stream") from the parking lot and back down the fire roads/breaks. took us about 4 hours (we are in 50s and in decent shape). pretty steep uphill portion; yes, we were sore after we did this. gorge near top very cool. not very crowded. several stream crossings required, and recent rains made these pretty challenging...slippery but no falls...lucky us....bring hiking "sticks"/poles if possible. we had a very kind fellow hiker (who had hiked this trail before) give us perspective on "how much longer" up the hill; she was awesome...thank you kind stranger!! give this hike a try, but ensure you leave plenty of time (we made it back to the parking light right at dusk). saw various mileages for this circuit, but our estimate is ~ 6 miles.

Совершенно потрясающая тропа! Физически сложно было спускаться, особенно в кроссовках, потому что путь то и дело пересекался речкой, а иногда по самой речке и пролегал. Но, вместе с тем, тропа эта стоит того, чтоб наведаться. Красивая река с водопадами, тень леса над головой и голые скалы по краям ущелья, бревна, изъеденные жуками, создают ощущение дикой, нетронутой человеком природы.

THis was a stunner. Tough rocky uphill, but all stairs and water. Then an easy fire trail back. Would recommend to those that enjoy the uphill climbs

This hike is moderately challenging and has little to offer in the way of views. Because of this, it's rarely busy and is not popular with families. This offers peace and solitude on a nice part of the park. The stream crossings can be challenging after a day of rain.
