Government Island used to be private for Aquia Harbor Residents. The trails were great and growing up I would use them for mountain biking. The old Government Island would get a 5 star, but they went and built a bridge letting people into the harbor without going through the security gate out front and built a poorly maintained boardwalk straight through the marsh (I'm sure the wildlife love that) and bypassed a good chunk of the original trail. They laid a bunch of pavement down (I'm not kidding) and I guess ran out of it or something because once you get on the island, they decided to dump a bunch of mulch on top of the old trail so it was practically impossible to ride a bike or even push a baby stroller. I'm actually glad they gave up maintaining the mulch trail and it's pretty much back to dirt again. The educational signs have obscenities scratched into them that still haven't been fixed. Ironically, they scrubbed the mural artwork that was on the big rock as "graffiti" but have left the new stuff to linger. I hardly go here anymore and I don't recommend it unless you want to grab the geocaches really quick.

An easy stroll with beautiful views. Great place to take a dog or small children, but the water was drying up when we went. Highly recommend when you suddenly have a few hours one afternoon.

This Federal Park is beautiful, historic and only a short drive from the DC Beltway. There is plenty of free parking and - at least when we visited - was not crowded at all. You will enjoy seeing where limestone was cut for the US Capitol - but more than that, the water view, birds and other wildlife will make your day.

This island was preserved by a local historian. Rock from the quarry was used in construction of the historic buildings in DC. You can see the marks in the rock from where slaves and masons excavated the rock. Then it would be loaded on boats and taken up the Potomac. It's a beautiful place. There's a path/boardwalk out to the island and then a loop trail around it with signs explaining things.

We explored this little gem with my daughter who recently moved to the area. Nice level walk with asphalt and wooden walkways. Even in the ground was relatively smooth. I saw families with strollers navigating it with ease. Dogs on leashes are welcome. Some information boards throughout explaining the history and displays. It's free!

We were so happy to have stumbled upon this gem of a place. Relaxing, full of history, and beautiful scenery. A nice walking path around the island. So cool to be where the stone from the white house originated. A great stop for families with kids.

Lovely place to hike, easy parking and well-marked trails. Wildlife is visible, and parts of the quarry rock with working marks is along the trail. I'm really glad this gem was saved as a park and not developed. Really a treasure in the DC area.

This place is great if you just want to get out and take a walk with the kiddos. It is mostly a dirt and cement path. Recommend for children who would like to walk and look at nature. I am local and love this place.

Pretty area and the quarries are pretty cool. Saw a bald eagle across the brook. Quite popular with the dog set.

This a nice place to take a walk, walk your dog and watch fish and turtles in the water areas. May even see a hawk or eagle. Can ride bikes too

Not far at all. A boardwalk runs from near the parking lot over a small creek. The paths are wide and as I remember comfortable to walk on. There is a slope on the other side that might be an issue if there is a wheelchair involved.
