The signs to reach this church from the highway were somewhat confusing and it seemed we were driving the wrong way up to it. The highway is busy, so that confusion may hinder some folks from visiting, but it is indeed worth a visit.
A couple minutes after we arrived, a lady from the adjacent office approached and offered us a tour inside the church, which we gladly accepted. The church, completed in 1757 and designated a National Historic Landmark, was beautiful inside. I noted some of the stones on the outer walls of the church had initials and other graffiti carved into them. One readable date was 1862 carved by apparently a member of the Texas Cavalry during the Civil War.
After our inspection of the church, we toured the graveyard. The church's Episcopal priest joined us and we had a short, but pleasant conversation. He noted that although many of the markers were quite old, those graves actually had been moved to their cemetery when the Marines expanded their grounds at Quantico.

This is a very historic area which includes this church. There is a very old graveyard which is along side and to the rear of the church. The day I was there, the church was closed, so be sure to check the hours of operation. I would also recommend the Government Island park, which is nearby.

I was very excited to see Aquia Church after visiting Government Island, where the stones to build it were quarried. It is a majestic and stately church. The grounds are spacious around it as the church community has built additional buildings to fit their needs. The church is surrounded by a cemetery with many old graves and the grounds are open from dawn to dusk. Sadly the church is not similarly open. I only got to see the building from outside. :(

Beautiful church. Property contains old cemetery. Like that the present congregation works hard to maintain historic integrity.

very Old and Beau T ful. church on the Hill. sound of choir is like angels thru out the walls. was there at xmas time. and lights flickering in each window seemed like we went back in time.

If you're lucky enough to get a tour (we were), this is a neat place to visit. Tucked away in a little corner of Stafford County, it's hard to imagine you're less than 1/4 mile from the Interstate. The church itself is a must see - you can picture Civil War soldiers stabling their horses in it - and the graveyard has lovely shaded paths to wander. Nice way to get off of I95 for a bit!

What a gorgeous building! And a wonderfully informative graveyard! Beautiful building, fascinating gravestones and a gorgeous winter day, what could be better! We hope to make it back when we can get there on a weekday so that we can get a tour of the inside of the building!

Very old church - from 1757 but it gorgeous and remarkably still in good condition. The church itself has all of the remnants of an old church, long wooden pews, high ceilings and stained glass. The surrounding gardens and cemetery are very nicely landscaped and peaceful. I've attended service there and found it a nice, thought provoking service with friendly people. The church sits high up off of the road so you can see from Route One and 610 but can be a pain to turn in. Growing up, we learned soldiers carved in the stones and wrote on the walls of the church during the Civil War - could be haunted! :0

I have not attended services at this church, however, it is steeped in history and dates back to the 1600. The staff is very knowledgeable of the history. The minister gives great tours of the building and it grounds. They often sponsor history events.

A must visit while in Stafford County! Such history and all around loveliness. FREE tours can be given Monday through Friday. Best to call the office first just to make sure someone is there is provide the tour. We took small group of 6 and we were the only ones there visiting the church. We had a wonderful guide who was not only knowledgeable but willing to let us spend as much time as we wanted looking around. She also answered every question we had. Look forward to taking other family and friends here for a tour.
