I admit it – my heart is in Historic Jamestowne. The first time I visited this site was 35 years ago with my parents. I remember walking down to the banks of the James River in the pouring rain and just standing there for the longest time. It hit me like a ton of bricks. This is where it all began. And not to take away from the Indigenous People, but in many ways our country started here at Jamestowne. Years later, I would take my first degree in History, in part, I believe, because of the influence of such incredible sites like Historic Jamestowne. It stayed with me over the years. For anyone who wonders if it is worth the extra time or money to come here after visiting Jamestown Settlement --- Absolutely! It’s a lot like going to visit Gettysburg. You wouldn’t go visit a museum and watch a Civil War reenactment several miles down the road and never go to the site where the battle actually occurred, would you? Same here. You have to go here to experience it. And there is so much to see. Besides the wonderful indoor museum; outside, visitors can see the location where the actual site of James Fort existed, the church, cemetery, an excavated well, the remains of buildings outlined at New Towne, the Glasshouse, the monument erected to the first settlers, along with incredible tours and continued archeological excavations. The recreated Jamestown Settlement, down the road, helps to bring history alive, but Historic Jamestowne helps the visitor to cement the actual history, where it happened. This place is a MUST SEE and well worth the trip. I cannot wait to return.

We found this site by accident and the history and preservation is AMAZING. It is a National Park and is worth seeing. This site is the original settlers site and you will see original buildings, foundations and can watch them dig for artifacts. Can't stress enough that everyone should visit this location. We also saw the Jamestown Settlement and wish this site would advertise more so people don't miss this.

The discovery of the original location of the Jamestown village is something that should thrill all Americans. During the week, the archaeologists work full-time on location. You can still see the excavations and visit the local museum and see all the pieces recovered. The town has an excellent location on the James River, with a magnificent view. o much to see...

This is the actual place where the Jamestown settlement took place. We took the archaeological tour with our guide Mr. Brown. He was so knowledgeable and you could really tell this work was what excited him. We were able to see actual digs going on. Everything was thoroughly explained and we could see how this data supported what the settlers went through. My husband and I were fascinated. The museum displayed some of the relics they unearthed. I highly recommend going and taking this tour.

Do NOT miss the living history interpretation of Anas Todkill!!! The Historic Jamestowne site, church, and museum are interesting and the volunteers are friendly and informative, but the amazing presentation of a Jamestown settler was the highlight! Willy Balderson brought the history to life and we learned so much. Spoiler alert--this is the first permanent English colony in the US (not the pilgrims at Plymouth), chartered to find gold and establish trade. Bring water, sunscreen, hat, etc if the weather is warm--there's not a lot of cover in the Historic Jamestown area. The National Park Service side of the site is much quieter and offers lots of shade. The walking paths are lovely and we saw a badger, squirrels, and lots of birds.
BTW, the Jamestown area has several historical attractions (and the names and signs are confusing, for sure!). This one is a cooperative arrangement between the National Park Service (part of the Colonial National Historic Park) and a private foundation. Follow signs for the National Park Service, Historic Jamestowne, or Jamestown Rediscovery. Yes, you'll pay admission to both NPS and the foundation at the same entrance building. Totally worth it. It makes sense to buy a National Park pass if you're also going to Yorktown Battlefield. We did not visit the Jamestown Settlement (not at the actual Jamestown settlement site, but it does have recreated boats and their signs have boats on them).

Historic Jamestown is the sight of the original fort. It is still an ongoing archeological dig in some areas. A must: do not miss the tour/lecture! It covers the story of why the settlement was originally created, the leadership and it's growth. including the establishment of the first common law in America. It presents that for years it was believed due to erosion that the original fort was gone....until they discovered rows of the palisades!
Also, did you know that the Jamestown Settlement was established 14 years before the pilgrim's landed?
Note: Historic Jamestown and Jamestown Settlement are two different venues.

This was an awesome place! The realism of the actual on-going archeological digs along with the excellent tour by archaeologist Anna, and the amazing museum made 5 hours go by like minutes. We felt very lucky to have made this choice for our day. Our understanding of the events that unfolded over time is now exponentially grown. There has been alot of discovery recently and for someone who learned history MANY years ago, it is mind bending. We especially loved the humanization of the personas that were mentioned - it made it so relevant. And the enthusiasm of the people working there is contagious. This is the authentic experience of Jamestowne and we think, not to be missed.

easy to find and navigate once there. The reconstructed buildings and fort walls gave a good feel for what it was like in the early days of the settlement. The plaques gave great information and the set up the archeological centre was both extremely interesting and easy to digest. Overall an excellent representation of one of the most important events in the settlement of the USA

Absolutely stellar interpretations and analysis by the staff including Mark Summers and Willie Balderson who were as knowledgeable and far more engaging than any history professor I had in college (and I had a lot of them, being a history major). Give yourself more time than you think you need - we came back the next day since we had to leave the day previous before finishing. Just a fantastic visit from the tours to the Archaearium to the island drive. Lovely folks all around. Be sure to donate until it hurts, too - this is a gem of a site and of an organization that must be preserved.

We're so glad you enjoyed your trip to Jamestown! If Mark and Willie taught all history classes, everyone would've been a history major! They're so dedicated to sharing the important history of this place and we love hearing when their dedication is contagious. Thank you so much for visiting and for your support.

The set up here is a mess. Part of the site is run by the NPS and has a fee and then a different part is run by the state of VA or some private group (I'm not sure I never really figured it out) but you have to pay for both if you want to see the full site. The NPS site (which was all we paid for because we had tickets for the not related Jamestown Settlement) doesn't have a lot to see. The Museum and park video were both very good. The Jr Ranger books for older kids was super confusing. Ever page you were supposed to scan a QR code to do the page but there is almost no cell service to be able to do that. My oldest was super frustrated but luckily the ranger let her do the younger book so she could earn her badge too. We did walk out to the grounds of the original site which was very pretty but again there wasn't much to see most of the ruins are part of the other paid site. Overall it was a fine visit and it probably works better if you just pay for the historic triangle ticket so you can get access to everything.
Your NPS fee here does also get you into the Yorktown NPS site as well. Or maybe we paid for a dual entry. Again the whole set up is fairly confusing and the lady at the desk at the NPS was not super helpful.

Hi there - we're sorry your visit to Historic Jamestowne wasn't what you expected! Colonial National Historical Park recently changed the fee structure at Historic Jamestowne and now requires that visitors pay admission twice, rather than an all-in-one ticket. We'll be sure to pass along your feedback about the issues you experienced with the Junior Ranger book and the confusion with ticketing.
We're glad you enjoyed the exhibits and the intro video and we hope you'll visit Jamestown again in the future. Thank you for your support!

It is, but the park is a private/public partnership, so they charge you an additional fee. We had our annual pass and it was $15 to enter, which is 50% off normal entrance fee.

Is it easy to get to Jamestown from Williamsburg and join a tour when you are there
撰写日期:2020年1月23日
both JAmestown and WIlliamsburg are very close to each other and you can drive the parkweay to get to both - watch the signs becasue sometimes they are confusing. But easy to get to the - they are on opposite ends of hte parkway from each other. Not sure about tours - we did everything by ourselves
撰写日期:2022年9月12日
Not as part of the tour. You do get to go onto them and explore freely.

Where is the best place to stay to be close to the settlement and have access to restaurants?
撰写日期:2018年10月11日
There are a number of hotels affiliated with colonial Williamsburg that are within walking distance. Merchant street that adjoins the colonial Williamsburg also have quite a few highly rated restaurants. However, it’s also an easy drive to get there and they have a free parking lot at the visitors center with very quick shuttles (big buses) to and from colonial Williamsburg.

I would allow at least 3-4 hours at Jamestown. A nice little film followed by a tour of the facilities and just some time to marvel how hardy and tough these folks really were. Their level of endurance was far above what is available today. With nothing but nature to fulfill their daily physical needs of food and water.

If you have a national park pass will that
cover the admission price?
撰写日期:2018年1月2日
Per the question the answer is accurately yes and no, here are specifics...
1. Interagency Senior, Annual and Colonial Park Pass - $5 Preservation Virginia entrance fee for pass holder and up to three additional adults with pass holder. $5 per person for everyone coming in under the pass - if 4 people are coming in under the pass, it is $20.
2. Holders of Interagency Military and Access Passes - free for pass holder and up to 3 additional adults accompanying pass holder.
