We loved all of the actors in the shops, sites and stage. We learned so much and really felt we were seeing actual colonialists and hearing about their lives. We stayed in a tavern room and loved it.
The negatives.. the food is mediocre at best, and over priced any place we at on property including Christina Campbell tavern.
It was disappointing to have so many places closed . We were there on Thursday and Friday, and missed several things we wanted to see because they were closed including restaurants. I was there a few years ago and loved many of the special programs and activities available. There were many fewer offerings this time.

Colonial Williamsburg was a great experience, and the era workers in costumes seemed to really enjoy their jobs. They were extremely knowledgeable and we learned a lot.
The only shortcoming is food choices are very limited. We are at the tavern in colonial Williamsburg, and as an adult that primarily eats vegetarian and no meat, there were little to no options. I opted for the children’s menu and I was charged an additional fee of $10, for an adult ordering a child’s plate. It was the same meal as my nieces. Please have other food options besides an onion pot pie, New Brunswick stew, cheese dishes or bring your own food! I wish I had known as I would have brought a sandwich with me.

Thank you for your kind words regarding our historical interpreters. We truly appreciate it. We are very sorry that you were not directed to the various restaurant options at Merchants Square which is closer to Bruton Parish and that portion of Colonial Williamsburg. There are multiple dining choices. Again we regret that you were not informed about this at our Visitors Center.

We had a nulti-day ticket which was great for senior citizens. We could leisurely see everything without becoming exhausted. The people working there were amazing. We really felt as is we were talking with people from the 18th century. Beautiful place to enjoy and learn some American history. Seniors should definitely spend the extra $10 for a multi-day ticket! It is really worth it!

We enjoyed the street performances, including Thomas Jefferson and the Drum/Fife performances. The court performance wasn’t a top attraction but it was full of school kids which may have contributed.

This was my first visit and I was blown away by the excellence of this experience. Every little detail pushes you back into 1700-1800’s. Two days was not enough to see it all but there’s always next time. My favorite part besides attention to details everywhere (architecture, clothing, demeanor, set ups) was the various programs and discourse of the cast members. It was evident that many hours of planning, research went into each discussion, possibility. I especially loved the Thomas Jefferson and Dr. Galt and Street Talks. Hanging of a Pirate was great too. If you have disabilities take the proper equipment. They are very accommodating and helpful.

Amazing when you know you are walking the same streets, entering the same doorways and in some cases eating the same food recipes as the founding fathers. The buildings and their condition leave little to the imagination about city life of colonial times. We had a great time. One of the oldest Masonic Lodges in the US is also here.

My wife and I had a multi-day pass, so we could take our time and not try to do too much in one day - we're both seniors. We enjoyed much of the Williamsburg experience, especially the speakers (James Madison, Patrick Henry, Georbe Wythe) and many of the craftspeople. It's a lot of walking or waiting for shuttles. Not everything is open every day. My biggest complaint was the incredibly rude and condescending person who provided us with our passes. I had purchased them online but wanted a physical pass - she seemed disinclined to pull herself away from her conversation with another staff member and vented her pique at us by being snippy and sarcastic. I asked my wife if it was just me or was she, ahem, not user-friendly. Can't understand why someone with that personality would be in her position. But once we reached the "village" itself, we enjoyed ourselves.

We went to colonial Williamsburg on a family outing on Mother’s Day with my mother and my two kids - almost 6 son and toddler daughter. My mother and I remembered our trip from when I was little and how rich the experience had been. We had also recently visited various living history museums in Europe and mount vernon and my son LOVED those. But at colonial Williamsburg - on a Sunday- most of the family friendly activities are closed - something that is quite shocking and not clear when you purchase the (quite expensive tickets). No play, no marching fife/ music, no very well known characters from history easily accessible (we found at later in the day that George Washington has spoken early in the morning and there was no information about that). I was also hoping to get my son a souvenir and the same colonial hat I got him at mount Vernon was 20% more expensive at colonial Williamsburg and a children’s period costume (a souvenir…) cost 135 to upwards of 200 dollars - which is totally unacceptable - I googled - revolutionary costumes can be 40 dollars on Amazon…
While some of the staff were very congenial - loved the folks playing games with the kids on the lawn, the carpenter lady who shared that in the past there were no more trees, the deeply knowledgable American Indian staff, our stagecoach driver (which costs an extra 50 bucks for 20 minutes regardless party size - almost twice as expensive as a few years ago for a family of 4) - some just stood there and it felt like we were bothering them if we asked a question, while others spoke with adult vocabulary and references with obviously young children as the target audience. The musket display was one of the only family friendly events on a Sunday and it lasted 5 minutes. I was really surprised that there were also way fewer staff walking around to make it feel like we were back in time. Instead we saw lots of cyclists and people jogging shirtless or having very large family picnics on the lawn for free - so it detracts from the historical experience. I also had to systematically translate what was being said so my son could understand which wasn’t the case at mount Vernon or at other venues. It felt like the park was struggling and had to hike prices and hire fewer staff resulting in a poorer customer experience. My son was disappointed that he didn’t see lots of people in costume, that the things in the movie at the visitor Center weren’t actually things he could see at the park (maybe because it was Sunday) and that there was seemingly nothing he could actually do. While he did enjoy the maze, the games on the lawn, the rifle going off, the palace, the carriage ride I felt strong armed into getting and the Native American talk, his tears and feeling stressed wondering where there were things to do with children at what time made me almost regret driving almost 3 hours to get here, getting a hotel etc when he was just as happy - and happier - to visit mount Vernon which is much closer to our house and didn’t require an overnight stay.
I hope the park will seriously consider how to become family friendly again, especially on Sundays. For example, when you get your tickets, you should receive information about the top 3 things to do with the type of group you are with. And it’s very easy to have more kid friendly activities and a marching band or something every day. I honestly feel duped, and that I could have made happier memories with my mom and son at another historic site.

We are thrilled to see your comments regarding Colonial Williamsburg. We strive to present our colonial history in a way that engages and entertains visitors such as you. We look forward to your return visit. Note that this weekend we have the Drummers Call which is an annual showcase of 18th-century military music. Visiting corps from around the country join our own Colonial Williamsburg Fifes and Drums for days of performances throughout the Historic Area. If you cannot attend this year, check our website for the dates for next year's performances. Kind regards.

The fact that it is set up as if you are touring the area during that timeframe is just really unique. The folks hired to be in character are in character, but not in a way that would scare kids. Great historical value & just really well set up. The only thing I'd change is to not make food so expensive.

Jamestown - yes. Yorktown - bus plus taxi. Bus leaves from and returns to the Williamsburg Transportation Center. No actual experience traveling to either destination by bus.

Is there any way of getting to Colonial Williamsburg from the Washington DC area if you don't drive? Any public transportation?

Hello, it is actually quite easy to get to Williamsburg from Washington, DC via public transportation. From Union Station in DC (near the U.S. Capitol building) you board an AMtrak train that goes straight through to the Williamsburg Station without changes. It takes about three and one-half hours from that point. You can also take the local METRO subway trains to Alexandria, Virginia, where there is an Amtrak station around the corner of the King Street Metro Station. From there the train takes about three hours to Williamsburg. At the Williamsburg station you can catch one of the local buses that bring you around town, or a taxi. The Williamsburg station is only a few blocks away from ticket offices to buy your visitor's pass to Colonial Williamsburg attractions. Come visit and enjoy.

Folding wheelchairs are available at the Visitor Center and may be rented on a first-come, first-served basis. No motorized chairs are available. You can rent from a local service and they will provide the motorized wheelchair near the Governors Palace.

Depends on how hot it is and how crowded. It can be fun but I would - like any excursion with this age group - consider breaking it up and have pool time or other activity in-between. It could be a long day and some stuff is more what adults would like.

Although there are shuttle buses to/from some areas it would be much more enjoyable to have your own vehicle. The greater Williamsburg/Yorktown/Jamestown area is very spread out. Also being able to take the driving tours makes for a much more enjoyable experience.

Hi there! Sure, there's lots of hiking and mountain biking in the Williamsburg area. For instance, there's a trail in Powhatan Creek park where you can hike or paddle in the creek as well as other popular trails a short drive from Williamsburg. We didn't get to do any of these hikes due to the extreme heat in July, but next time for sure. There's also a nice beach close to the Jamestown settlement area where you can swim, paddle or go fishing. And if you are interested in amusement parks, there's Busch Gardens, and also a water park. And don't miss the Rockefeller folk art museum in town. Enjoy!
