So I feel like so many people say it’s easy and short and while it’s definitely not the HARDEST hike I’ve been on, it’s no walk-in the park.
The way down is quite easy, but always remember you have to come back up that way and it’s quite an uphill climb on the way back.
Am I saying not to do it? Absolutely not. It was gorgeous!! I just wish more reviews were detailed about it. I suppose having family who are physically challenged with bad knees/knee replacements and elderly it makes me look at it differently, but they did manage to do it. It’s over a mile long, in and out. And as stated before, it took us well over an hour to complete it since we went slower.
Wear good hiking boots that have a good grip; those wood boardwalks can get slippery. And if you have trekking poles? Use them. They do say you can grab a branch from the forest when you begin to help you, but I feel like trekking poles get better grip. Just be careful on those spaced out wooden planks on the boardwalks; could easily trip yourself up if you’re not careful. Lots of steps/stairs on there and the path is very narrow so sometimes we had to step off to let others pass.
Make sure to plan to stay there at the end for a bit. There were quite a few people at the very end so we waited a turn to see the views but also just to take it in. Take pictures sure, but take a moment to just soak in the amazing-ness of the ocean in a way you may not have seen before.
It’s breathtaking.

We got this as a tip during our trip and then added it
We have absolutely no regrets. Very nice walk through the forest of 25 minutes back and forth 25 minutes back.
The view is really amazing and if you are lucky you will see sea otters, seals, whales or orcas swimming by
You have to pay $20 to drive and mate there. Then you also nag bare Neah bay and Shi Shi beach but you can also drive there without paying.
We thought it was more than worth it

Easy trail but slippery with wooden walkways and forest trail with roots and rocks. Not for those with mobility issues. This is a trail through a rain forest and not one for wearing flipflops, but neither does it require great stamina or hiking gear. There is a semi steep section but it is a Great way to stretch legs for a hour and get breathtaking views at the furthest northwestern point of the lower 48 states. The viewpoints are at overlooks about 50’ above the ocean. There are several steep dangerous ocean cliff dropoffs that are UNPROTECTED so keep children and pets on the trail!! Dogs ok on a leash.

We love this short well maintained trail. The final end is so worth the long drive to actually arrive in Neah Bay. Don't forget to purchase your Makah parking permit at either the Makah Cultural Museum (another worthy stop), several stores or online before your trip. We actually stayed at Maggie's Ocean Retreat across from the Tsoo-yess Beach. This made it very easy to hike the incredible Shi Shi Beach trail as well.

It is a short hike to some observation platforms. The hike is less than 1 1/2 miles round trip. Views are impressive from high above the rocky shores. The trail is a combination of dirt trail and timber boardwalks. There is a $20 recreation fee to the Makah Indian Nation to park and use the area.

This should be a top place to go in you're vacationing in Washington and hiking. We saw soooo many eagles on the drive up and at the marina to collect our permit. Even more off the cape. We went to see puffins and while we did not see any ....we saw seals, whales, cormorant, ducks, and again eagles. And the VIEW. Just a gorgeous hike!

After a long drive from anywhere, your first stop is in Neah Bay to get a permit. I would suggest allowing extra time and get your permit at the Museum and spend a little time there first. The hike itself was amazing with tall trees and lots of rain forest like scenery. Then the view from the cliffs are extraordinarily beautiful.

We got there early around 10:30 and had no issues parking. By the time we were done the parking lot was full. There are walking sticks available to use at the trail head and if you want to purchase you just leave $20. They are hand made sticks. The trail is very steep in the beginning, levels off for a bit, then you start walking on wooden walkways and steeps. There are a lot of roots and rocks so be careful. The views at the end are worth the hike.

One of our favorite hikes on our Pacific Northwest trip. The views are amazing. Not too hard - some stairs. Highly recommend!

Don't visit the Pacific Northwest without making your way to the most northwestern point in the lower 48. The hike out to the point is not overly difficult, but wear proper shows and take some water along. The views at the end will be worth the hike! No matter what kind of weather is present, I think this is worth a visit.

Hi from Australia! We want to visit Neah Bay / Cape Flattery in October, 2023. Any advice about accommodation in the vicinity would be welcome - it's pretty hard to work it all out from so far away. I'm guessing that some accommodation closed in recent years? We don't have a van or tent, so we need cabins / hotels or similar. Thanks!

There are cabins that you can stay in that are owned by the Makah Nation. There's the Cape Resort that's in town, but there's also the Hobuck Beach Resort. Both have a collection of cabins that you can stay in for the night, as well as RV spots. The cabins are very well furnished and make for a good place to stay in Neah Bay. I would call the Makah Nation and make sure that the dates you want to stay are available.
Also, depending on the time of year, there will be a limited number of restaurants and dining options. If visiting in October, I would bring anything you want to eat from out of town, as the only thing likely to be open is a coffee shop and a grocery store.

It was open when I went however you need to drive through town to get to it.. the museum at edge of town sells permits if they are.

Just past the tribal museum (on left) is the market (on left). That is where we purchased our pass. It is good for the entire year. If you want to try delicious Indian tacos, go to Pat's, which is a bit past the market on the right. That was one of the highlights of our trip . . . food and owners great!

Ditto on budzilla's advice. Sidenote try and check the ferry times and be prepared to wait for the next one it can get busy.

For most people I would say this is an easy 1.5 mile trail. But if you're like me with knee problems, it is a little difficult. Take your time and it will be fine. Also, take advantage of the benches and picnic area.
