Great Local Yakima History
2019年9月
With so much local history lost over time, Fort Simcoe is a delightful exception. It is set in a great location that gives you the perspective on a time gone by. We look forward to a return visit.

Curious place, makes you wonder

This is a well maintained park, not real close to anything and not very busy. The surrounding area is mostly undeveloped, ranch or farm land. It's pretty easy to imagine what this land was like in 1856 when the fort was built. You look at the terrain and the map and the location makes sense, near water, timber, etc. This fort only operated as a military fort for three years, beginning 1856 when the disturbances between the Indians and the newcomers became frequent. After that it was the Indian agency and school. It's curious that when the government abandoned the property that the Indians maintained it and to some extent still do (it's on the Yakima reservation). Why would they want to perpetuate a site that was either an insult or painful memory or both? Anyway, we enjoyed visiting this very quiet park and being able to see what a real frontier fort of the mid 1800s looked like.

We recently took grandkids to this state park. We packed lunch & had a picnic and just enjoyed our time together. My grand sons really liked seeing how life used to be without all of the electronics we use today! Of course they like our present time better! Plan to spend some time when you go, you need to visit all of the homes & quarters of the men stationed there. Very interesting. We had a peaceful relaxing day.

Disappointed, was closed!

We had company and drove out to see Fort Simco, it was supposed to be open. The gate was locked and the Parks Department did not know why. She said we could go around the gate and look around, Very interesting but would have liked to go in the buildings. The best part of the trip was seeing wild horses run through the Fort. Quite a ways out to drive, they need to say closed on their web page when they are not going to be open on a Wednesday.

Molto interessante

Know your true history. Learn it. Don't let it repeat itself.

Children were tortured and killed, abused, stripped of their culture, their families, and it all happened here. Know your history. Respect what happened. Fort Simcoe was a militarized Indian Boarding School. This is nothing to celebrate, this is not a 'fantastic' piece of history - but an important one. Never again should anything like this happen.

It was close to 100 degrees this day, no shade to park your car. But it was well worth the drive here. They have great signage to get you there. They have a nice layout of the original fort in the 1850's. one thing I was surprised at was this was a fort with the 9th infantry battalion. I served the usa army with the 9th infantry battalion. No cost, but you can leave a donation. Having just traveled to Alaska and the Yukon, I thought it was odd warning people of bears. It was worth the drive out from Yakima. They are closed Monday and Tuesday.
