Exceptional experience. Mike, our tour guide was excellent in every way possible. The mine, museum and gift shop were great.

We thoroughly enjoyed our visit to this site. We took a tour of the mine. Wilson was our guide and he was very informative and pleasant. The mining village was interesting to walk through and the people inside the buildings were also very informative.

This was an awesome tour! The tour guide was great. He was informative and funny. The tour goes back into a coal mine so it’s cold and a bit tight. If you’re claustrophobic this might not be for you. Little kids may get antsy as it’s at least 30 minutes long. The surrounding grounds have old houses and log cabins to explore. I would recommend it.

My son (age 7) said this was awesome! I was afraid he would be bored by all the history, but he didn’t want to leave. Our tour guide Wilson was a retired coal miner, and he made the tour fun and enjoyable. I would highly recommend this for kids.

This was a fantastic museum. I would recommend it to anyone traveling in the area. It gives you a real feel for the lives and challenges faced by coal miners. Everyone was friendly and helpful. The exhibits are interesting and presented very professionally.
Our tour guide Gerald had been in the mines for 40+ years and was very informative and had some really interesting stories.

This tour is a not-to-be-missed experience. What better way to obtain an understanding and education of the work coal miners did when coal was widely used. I have a new appreciation of the actual back-breaking work miners did to provide such a necessary substance. Gerald, our tour guide and a former miner, was phenomenal in explaining the history of the mine, demonstrating several ways miners used to find their way (wicks, flames - before batteries and electricity), as well as tools miners used and stories of survival while working, from the importance of canaries and rats (yes, true!) to securing your lunch pail and hiding your identifying token from other miners. You'll have to take the tour to understand what that means - but truly fascinating! We were so glad we went.

Everyone who works here is very friendly. If you tour the coal mine, bring a light jacket or sweatshirt, as it is typically about 55' inside the mine year round.

We do I begin… everyone was nice and knowledgeable. Dorsel our guide shared many stories, interesting facts and history of the coal mining days.
It was an eye opening experience of a day in the life of a coal miner.
The museum and tour are a must see for all ages!

This was a very informative and enlightening tour of the mining world. The guide was a former miner and he was a wealth of knowledge as he took us into the mine and gave us a glimpse into the work of a Miner. Coal has been influential to the growth of this country and there is a new appreciation for the families that lived in the coal mine camps and for the sacrifices they made for this industry.

Is Beckley UTV friendly? Can we ride our UTV to trailheads in area or would w need to trailer them? We are thinking family vacation here and would include a couple o days of trail riding on SxS but we have toy hauler campers an couldn’t trailer to trail heads.

Since the children's museum is such a big part of the description, is the coal mine geared only to small children? We have two teens and no younger children, would it be enjoyable for us?

Our son is 15, and he seemed to find the tour interesting. He was less interested in the above-ground miner's housing, etc., but he did enjoy the gift shop.

I called to verify that the outside area is dog friendly. The dogs are just not allowed in any of the buildings.

You can just go. On a busy holiday weekend you might have to wait 30 minutes for the underground tour, but most times there is no wait. I'd get there at least 1 hour prior to closing if you want the tour.

Yes...the main building is well layer out and the mine car is tight but I believe there was a person in a wheelchair who made it when I was there

The main building is definitely up to ADA code and so are the sidewalks to all the outbuildings. I honestly did not notice if the little tram going down into the coal mine had a special wheelchair car on it or not. I would call the office and ask about the church, school, homes, etc.
