There are so many beautiful trails in this refuse. We walked a few of them; everything from the long Farm Trail to a few of the shorter trails. A good mix of trees (in their glorious fall colors), grasslands and wildlife. They are also doing forestry restoration and we were able to see some of that on one of our walks. Pick your trails based on your level of difficulty and length. So many fantastic options. Just get out and enjoy!

Stopped by but they were closed but had posting of events. One was a beaver talk with address given. It was at a beautiful boardwalk off Freeland road. We drove out there on our own, did the walk. Came upon a tiny baby deer and later maybe the mother.

A nice walking trail fully on Trex so easy to navigate and no problems with ticks or getting wet if it has rained. Just a little less than a mile.

Big fan of the Freeland Boardwalk Trail! Though I love a good bog boardwalk, this new trail is raised and built with Trex, which I imagine will last longer. I enjoy this trail as it’s a 1/4 mile loop through a bog, with Canaan Fir trees, and a nice end to a long day. This would be a great destination for families or anyone with mobility issues as it’s flat, there are guide rails so you won’t roll off, and benches sprinkled throughout. Any time I’ve visited, I’ve been the only person there so it’s really peaceful. I’ll have to try other times of day as I’ve only seen birds, though there were clearly muddy paw prints here and there, so someone is sneaking around other times of day.

We stumbled upon this place while in Canaan, and we loved it. The visitor's center was clean and the workers there were friendly and informative. We did the Freeland Boardwalk which was short and great for a rainy afternoon so our shoes did not wet while hiking. The next day we did the Beall Trails - hiked the southern loop, and then went the northern route to the Bog Overlook. We are a family of 4 with children 6 and 8. Both kids did it no problem. The Beall Trails were wet after the rain and all our shoes were wet, but that is expected.
We would love to check out more trails next time we are in the area!

Did the shorter Freeland Boardwalk trail which was very nice. Very easy to walk, can't get lost and featured a variety of plants. We unfortunately didn't see much in the way to animals with the exception of a few birds. Would like to come again in the early morning to see it during a different time of day.

Main building was closed due to COVID-19, but we were still able to hike the trails in the area. Well maintained. We particularly enjoyed the elevated walkway through the marsh. We were able to take our relative who was in a wheelchair on the walkway.

Really nice loop hike - easy with little elevation change. The hike offered a variety of different forest settings - from bogs, to hardwood stands, beautiful moss covered rocks, open rocks and fields. It is a well traveled mountain bike route - albeit would be best for advanced bikers.
It was fairly muddy but you can get around the mud on most parts of the trail. Overall the trail is well defined but the trail markers are not always easy to find. You're not looking for paint markers on trees - rather colered plastic pieces nailed to a tree. We did get a bit off trail but quickly found are way back. As this is a wildlife refuge the trails are not maintained so a bit more rugged than you might found in national forests or state parks. Nevertheless pretty easy to negotiate. It's a beautiful area and we plan to do some more hiking there in the future.

We mainly visited the Freeland Trail and the drive on Freeland Road. It is beautiful and full of birds. The visitor center nearby appears to be under construction, but trail maps are available.
