Nice place for nature

Great for camping and hiking. You can go fishing. Good view of mountains and trees. Lovely in Fall with the leaves changing colors but I would avoid it in winter!

Beautiful and full of wildlife

Beautiful forest with amazing scenery. Plenty of views, creeks, and rocks. Lots of wildlife, tons of deer and turkeys. Gorgeous in the winter and roads were well maintained.

Unspoiled, remote and incredible hikes
2020年9月
This place is beautiful and definitely away from it all. Better planning on our part would have meant that we purchased hiking books with detailed maps that we could bring with us. I was using AllTrails to select trails and gps directions, but we lot cell phone service and never made it to one of our intended hikes. We decided to leave MNF and head to Blackwater Fall State Park one morning, just so we could have marked trails and maps. The valley and falls at BSP are fantastic but the hiking is much better in MNP. The sights are beautiful and .unspoiled. Just do some research first so you know how to get to the trailheads. One you get to the trailheads, there are maps and the trails are marked. The only thing missing the trail maps is distance of hikes, so again, lesson learned- do your research. Also, beware that many of the roads leading to trailheads are unsaved, so plan your choice of vehicle accordingly.

Beautiful place
2018年10月 • 好友
This was a nice space to visit. I stayed in Snowshoe Mtn and was completely fogged in for two days. However, once I left elevation, I was able to do some hiking. Blackwater Falls is a beautiful spot. I went to the Cranberry fields but due to the type of day it was (very cold and raining steadily) and the time of year (late October) it was a fast and chilly walk. I'd go back in the summer.

A GRAND place to day trip

The forest is one of the reasons we moved to this great part of West by God Virginia. Easy access to rivers, streams, camping, and hiking.

Gorgeous forest.

I had the opportunity to spend several days in the forest. Dolly Sods, Canaan Valley, Seneca Rocks, Spruce Knob, Blackwater Falls in the north. Falls of the Hills Creek, Green Banks Observatory, Cranberry Glades, Beartown State Park in the south. Several scenic highways. Had a great time exploring this area!

Adventure Awaits minutes away

Born and raised in Elkins, the Mon Forest has been my playground for many years. Fishing, camping, hiking, hunting, you name it the Mon Forest has all of that and more to offer. You can access the Mon Forest taking about a 10-15 minute drive out of Elkins. The Stuart Memorial Drive is the best road to take for views and different access areas. You can also stop by the Monongahela National Forest Headquarters located at 200 Sycamore St in Elkins for more information on trails.
