There are two different ways to do this trail. Please know ahead of time which trail you are exploring. We left from the parking lot and hiked down the mountain. We did not take the wide path by the waterfall. My kids are all teens and I was thankful they were not young. I could not have carried them. I would have been a nervous wreck. The trail down the mountain has loose rocks and drop offs. It wasn’t easy. After the mountain climb down to the middle you have the option to then depart down the over 800 stairs. Halfway down I realized it was a little much. Nowhere to stop except on the actual staircase. I’m in fairly good shape. Not overweight. Even my teens complained they were done! This is not like others have described as a “abandoned town”. There is a fence around an old building. History says it was once a community but that time is long ago. Make sure you are in good physical shape as I stopped many times on the way back up. We are glad we have the memory but it’s a once only.

Should have looked this up before we went. It was a challenging hike based on our skill level / health but we enjoyed the views and were proud of our accomplishment. We did not make it down the stairs but plan to work up to it for our next trip.

We love the trail and its views. We started from the Fayetteville Station end which has a lovely stream with some small falls. There’s a beautiful waterfall not far up the trail and a great view of the bridge along the way. Next time we’ll start earlier so we can go all the way.

It is a great trail for a workout before beer and pizza at Pies and Pints! Start near the top, hit those stairs and then cross the tracks down to the river and watch some rafts go by. Then, head back up to your vehicle and be proud of yourself!

Interesting steep hike. Very rundown. Before the stairs is interesting, but the 820+ stairs that continue on were not unless you are there for a good stairs workout or you are crazy enough to do it to say you did it. Spouse stayed back and waited for me to say worth it or not. Needless to say spouse didn't make the trek down.

821 stairs are easy to go down but take a lot of energy going up. The mine site is neat but very run down. If you go to the other side of the gorge and pass Endless Wall’s two trailheads and make the next right to house head trailhead you can walk to a mine site that is in much better shape. You can still walk the whole way down to the river if you want to challenge yourself (1 hour 20 minutes down- nice people gave us a ride up or I might still be walking).

Dont let the 821 stairs dissuade you. There are landings so it isn't straight down, or up, and you can take them at your own pace. They are wide and well maintained. The trickiest part of the trail is getting to the stairs. Approximately one half mile of dirt trail can be slippery in wet conditions (as I found out) and a ledge close to a drop that was worn by erosion. There is an interpretive sign at the top of the trail and at the bottom you can view the remains of a couple of coal mining buildings, just like at the Headhouse Trail, with the addition of a tipple (read the interpretive sign) and the mine entrance. The area is well documented with informative signs.

The first part of the hike is steep and rocky which requires watching your step carefully. It brings you to the middle stage of the mine and the history there is quite interesting. The history continues as you go down a 800+ step staircase but isn’t worth a heart attack coming back up if you have any cardiac or pulmonary limitations.

Don't be fooled... It is actually closer to a 3 mile hike if you want to walk all the way down to the mine town ruins. It's definitely worth it, but it's quite a trek if it's a hot day or if you're not a fan of steps! It's definitely a mile and a half down and about a mile and a half up. Very cool to see all the remnants! :D

Kind of realized that we were going to finish this with a giant sense of accomplishment. Yes, we did! There is a bit of a hike to the steps, then the steps. Was a lot of them! But, was really cool to see the ruins of this mine town. Bottom line is it was a great form of exercise. We spent some time at the bottom and some time before you start the steps to look at all the ruins. All in all, we did it all in less than 2 hours. Elevation change was close to 800 feet and over 8000 steps according to my app. Was a great time and something you should do when in town. Helps makes up for the extra vacation eating.

If you walk steps down, is there an alternate way to get back easier walk?
撰写日期:2022年3月9日
It's a two way deal, all or nothing. The only alternative I can think of would be continuing down to the river and then having someone in a boat pick you up - but that assumes there is a suitable landing spot, current isn't difficult and, of course, the boat savior.
