A Tribute to the Land Ethic
2021年8月
A gem in the middle of nowhere, the foundation on 300 acres promotes responsible and environmentally sensitive land use. Furthering the legacy of one man who was influential in the development of modern environmental ethics and wilderness conservation, this is an educational and simple yet beautiful setting. Our tour guide was excellent.

A Paean to Aldo
2021年9月
The foundation is more of an ode to Leopold itself, although it does talk about his conservation efforts and conservation in general. If you don't know who he was (we didn't), the focus of the visitors center is to educate you on the man himself. The hike to his shack is modest. The visitors center itself is very interesting, claiming to be the greenest building in the world at one point. If you're in town, its worth a trip.

Wonderful Learning Opportunity
2021年10月 • 夫妻情侣
We didn’t know what to expect since physical challenges prevented us from any hiking but spending time in the beautiful center made us glad we took the time to stop. The staff was very friendly and helpful. We spent the majority of our time in the new exhibit room where I feel I truly got to know the entire Leopold family. There was something very poignant about being able to actually touch the saddle Aldo rode...almost like an instant connection through the 8+ decades since he rode it. I learned so much from that visit even though we were not able to hike to the Shack. I highly recommend this stop even if you’re physically challenged. Gotta go home and read “Sand County Almanac” again!

Near the Crane Foundation
2021年7月
Even if you are not familiar with Aldo Leopold, it's worth a visit. You'll learn something. The woman at the visitors center was welcoming and we enjoyed our conversation with her. Several hiking trails by the center . Guided tours were not being offered when we visited so we will have to go back again next time we are in the area. We combine our visit here with a tour of the Crane Foundation.

The amazing cranes
2019年12月 • 独自旅游
Spent $35.00 to enjoy a tour at the foundation highlighting the roosting cranes before they migrate south to Florida. We were taken by tractor to a staging area and inside the blind we we able to see cranes flying in for the evening to roost for the night. Hundreds flew in in varying numbers in groups. They had 4 strong telescopes to see them closer as they were on a sandbar surrounded by the river. The two women who led the tour were knowledgeable, working in the field, and had many interesting stories. It was quite enjoyable from 2:30 pm-5 pm. People came from all over Wisconsin to witness the cranes. A few pictures but taken with an iPhone, the last one taken with my phone thru the scope.

Nice day trip
2019年11月
I visited the center, the Aldo Leopold shack, and the crane blind when I went for a lecture and Crane Congregations Expert Tour. Staff were friendly and knowledgeable, and we were served a nice afternoon snack of local wine, cheese, and honey with bread, crackers and fruit. We were offered hand warmers and hot drinks to help survive the cold when we went to observe the roosting cranes. All in all a great day trip.

For environmentalists and historians

The foundation's mission is do further the legacy of one of America's greatest thinkers. considered the father of wildlife ecology, a promoter of responsible and environmentally sensitive land use, and a fascinating personality. Tour the family plot, walk the trails, visit the foundation's unique headquarters building or talk with the dedicated staff; it will a be an eyeopening day! Just don't go on Sunday when everything's closed.

Such an amazing place!
2018年7月 • 夫妻情侣
My husband and I visited here on our trip to Baraboo area. The center is very nice (also - it is an extremely energy efficient building), has nice bathroom facilities, and has an informative exhibit to learn about Aldo Leopold and his family and their incredible work. There is an area in the corner of the room to watch short videos about Aldo Leopold, his children, the shack, and the center. I recommend watching these videos - they were very informative! We paid to do a self guided tour (unfortunately, we missed the group guided tour) at the center and they provided us with a brochure including a map of the shack and different points of interest. We hiked around the shack and visited all of these areas, which we really enjoyed. Self guided tours cannot go or see inside the shack - only the group guided tours can do this. Still, it was worth it to see the cabin from the outside and see the grounds. The bugs were incredibly bad when we visited! Our bug spray did not seem to have much effect! I would honestly suggest bringing a mosquito net for your face and wearing long sleeves and pants to avoid being bit by mosquitoes. We spent about 2 hours or so here - about 45 minutes at the center and 1.25 hours at the shack and grounds. This was a very informative and interesting visit! I highly recommend it for anyone interested in conservation in general and anyone interested in Aldo Leopold's work!

One thing I wish is that there would have been more information about Aldo Leopold's wife in the center's exhibit.

The Place Where the Land Ethic Began
2018年8月 • 夫妻情侣
It was wonderful to revisit Aldo Leopold's Shack and to learn more of the details about his family and their continuing work to advocate for understanding the land and working to restore the balance that offers so many benefits to mankind and to the natural world. We enjoyed a wonderful tour of the land and the shack and had the chance to read all the letters back and forth between several publishers who considered publishing "A Sand County Almanac." Aldo Leopold came to an agreement with Cambridge University Press just six days before his death from a heart attack. His book was really the foundation for the modern environmental movement. I pray that we do not forget the knowledge passed along by Leopold. It has always been interesting to me that Wisconsin seemed to produce so many influential people in the National Parks and the environment, among them: John Muir, Aldo Leopold, Sigurd Olson and Gaylord Nelson.

We didn't really know what to expect but were interested to learn of this family's dedication to the land. Unfortunately, with the mosquitoes biting so badly during our visit, we couldn't really explore the surroundings.
