In the valley adjacent the side of the road, is this well-tended cemetery full of Gordon Highlanders mown down, apparently, by a solitary German machine gun.

A small but different Cemetery in honour of the Gordon Highlanders, all of who were killed nearby. Well laid out and very worthy of their bravery.

within the newfoundland memorial park, its on the path around the park. and a tribute to those who fell. and a tribute to the commonwealth war graves commission who does a fantastic job looking after all the cemeteries world wide not just on the Somme.

This small cemetery just off the D938 contains the bodies of a number of soldiers from the Gordon Highlanders who were killed in action on 1 July 1916 and were buried near where they fell in a battlefield trench. As the exact location of the graves is not known, the headstones have been arranged in two concentric semicircles.
If you have a relative buried here, or are interested in the history of the Gordon Highlanders, it Is well worth a visit.
Note: There is no parking - you have to park on a grass verge alongside a very busy main road. Also, the farmer has ploughed across the path leading to the cemetery, so be prepared to get your shoes muddy.

This small cemetery contains 99 officers and men of the 2nd Gordon Highlanders, who were killed on 1 July 1916. They were buried together in their support trench. There are so many cemeteries in the area, but this one is intimate. A must for those following the story of the Gordons or 7th Division, but the concentration here of one unit's losses in just one day of fighting makes it a poignant visit for even the most hardy of battlefield tourists.
