While I am not into biking, I am interested in railroad history of Wisconsin. Glacial Drumlin State Trail is one of the trails of the "Rails to Trails" program of the State of Wisconsin. Some of the trails have their terminus located in the former railroad depots, as well as trails themseleves running on the old railroad bed. Glacial Drumlin is in the Lake MIlls Railroad Depot. It has a tiny museum inside, with exhibits of local fauna and some railroad memorabilia and photos.

I hiked about 8 miles on this trail, starting at the Lake Mils trailhead. There are a lot of different landscapes to see depending on how far you go--I only hiked a small part and I got through forests, marshes and plains. I also saw a lot of wildlife, including herons, butterflies, snakes (not poisonous ones) and more small birds than I could keep track of. This is a beautiful trail and definitely one I want to explore more of!

Great biking or hiking trail, lots of stops in small towns along the way. My wife and I like the wildlife, rivers, and quiet. We will take a trip off the trail to enjoy a cold beer and cheese curds at the many towns that dot the trail. A quick stop in several small towns will give you the time to meet the locals who have always pointed out great stops for artists, wine samplings or a gallery. We have repeated this trail trip at least 20 times and loved them all!

I began my bike ride at the Waukesha end of the Glacial Drumlin rather than at its Western end. The trailhead is well-marked with plenty of parking and rest rooms. Within minutes, this paved trail ducks into a nature preserve and continues through a mix of parkland, marsh, wooded areas, mixed vegetation without going off road. There are rest rooms, trail pass kiosks, picnic and restaurant stops on or near the trail throughout the 1st 10 miles. I wasn't sure how my road bike would handle the crushed gravel surface that begins after Dousman, but the trail was firm with only a thin layer of gravel and very easy to ride. I rode an additional 6 miles, a scenic stretch through marsh and woodland, meeting only dragonflies, songbirds and chipmunks. Don't like the bumpiness of plank bridges? The bridges on this stretch have a runner of rubberized mat down the middle providing a smooth passage.

I rode this segment on a a cool and breezy Wednesday, with large fluffy clouds passing overhead. That combination proved important on my return trip with a burning afternoon sun at my back. Note while there are few hills on this stretch, it is an almost imperceptible, gradual uphill outbound; while you won't notice it much on the first part of the ride, the slight downhill on the return trip makes that even more enjoyable.

We have traveled all parts of the trail at various times. We live just off the trail in Lake Mills but moved here from near Dousman. The 2+ hour trip from Dousman to Lake MIlls is sunny and full of great views. The trip from Lake Mills to Cottage grove is smooth and easy with some shade but lots of sun too. We brought money and stopped for a bite to eat before biking back. There is a wonderful little cafe right by the end of the trail in Cottage Grove. In Lake Mills there are bathrooms and vending machines or you're not far from downtown and anything you may need.

We rode from Jefferson to just west of Lake Mills. Sand Hill Cranes were on the trail and the trees canopied several miles which offered great shade. We were disappointed that it was not paved as we had read on other websites, but otherwise it was a nice hard packed trail with great views of the lakes and rivers.

We started our biking journey at the trailhead in Cottage Grove and headed east to Lake Mills --- approximately 15 miles one way. The trail is a crushed gravel rail trail and quite level offering a pleasant ride for all levels of cyclists. The trail is scenic and most of it is lightly covered / tree lined offering shade and a comfortable riding experience.

Approximately 14 miles east of Cottage Grove is Rock Lake where there is a nice bridge to take a break over Rock Lake. There's also a public beach and old train station just a bit east of there in Lake Mills.

Many birds, wildfloweres, etc can be seen on this trail---and a lot of chipmunks who like to live dangerously darting out in front of cyclists 😉

We visited in late May, and the flowers and wildlife were amazing. Sandhill cranes, egrets, great blue herons, indigo buntings, 13 line ground squirrels, and Canada geese were in abundance.

The trail surface is mostly crushed limestone. "Crushed limestone" is different than "gravel" - it is mostly pretty much rock dust, and compacts very nicely into a stable roadbed. However, the ground squirrels love to dig holes right through the crushed limestone in the center of the trail, so you need to keep your eyes open as you ride.

Riding out of Lake Mills, the habitat variation is astounding. Riding west, within 5 miles you have gone through tamarack swamp, mature woods, and prairie.

I love the way Wisconsin bike trails are clearly labeled and easy to find for out of state travelers. There is parking. This does not happen all over the US. This trail is beautiful to ride. There are small towns along the route. We felt lucky to be riding on a sunny spring day with lots of flowers blooming, beautiful bridges, rivers and a lake. The scenery was spectacular with newly planted fields. I felt fortunate to have the chance to experience this place.
