This is the same place as Maunakea, so I am not sure why it is listed twice. People come here to view the night sky. It does get very cold here, ie 0C or 32F, so you better dress for it. I have written a review of Manuakea and you can see the details of this there

We drove up to the visitors center twice during our 9 day stay . Once to stargaze and once to watch the sunset . The sunset has a limited view , but is beautiful, and you must hike up a very steep hill. My son and boyfriend were able to make the hike up the hill but I could not as I have an old ankle injury and a heart condition. . When we were there to star gaze we had an incredible time seeing the stars but the rangers there were rude. I have a handicap parking pass and we parked in a handicapped spot. I got out to use the restroom and my son told me a ranger actually opened the door to the car he was sitting in the back seat to inspect if we had a handicap parking pass. That was rude and unacceptable to just open the door with my son in the car . You could clearly see it from outside the windshield hanging on the rear view mirror without invading our privacy. They were giving people instant tickets if they were parked in a handicap spot without a pass, which I agree with but don’t harass people who actually have a handicap placard. People kept shining their car lights and slamming doors and not being respectful of others who were there to see the stars in a quite nice place. So be prepared to have patience with rude people and the rangers are very strict and I feel rude.

AWESOME. ...and we only went to the visitor center at 9300 ft. Got there at 5:30/6pm or so with snacks for dinner to have a car-picnic. Perfect timing to snag a parking spot and acclimatize. Hiked 200 or so more feet up to watch a spectacular sunset, then came down for a snack and waited for full darkness to see the stars. An astronomer at the visitor center started pointing out constellations and answering questions at about 7:45p to closing (9p).

Could not go to the summit because we did not rent a 4 wheel drive vehicle. Visitor center has flush toilets and small gift shop. It blocks visitors from continuing to the summit if they lack 4 wheel drive. Was kinda bummed out but there are hiking trails around and some informational signs.

Worth the drive, but I was expecting to see so much more from the visitors' center than we did. The center is surrounded by hillsides/mountains. Still very pretty, but it's likely better to go all the way to the summit. We chose not to keep going due to the high winds and lack of oxygen. Be sure to bring your coats to the visitors' center too...we went from 82 degrees to 52 degrees very quickly!

So first thing first - driving through Hawai'i island from east to west is easy but you do feel the altitude/pressure - in your eyes, head, ears - it's a quite intimidating road - perfectly easy to drive without obstacles and visibility but there is no service for about 50 miles and you don't want your car to die - we did see some + we drove a 2022 Ford Escape and going one way we "lost" 1/4 of our gas tank! Round trip from KOA to ITO airports = half!!!! of the gas tank gone! And there are no gas stations, food stops anything - there is just some military base and some governmental/science buildings here and there.

Now, getting that out of the way - you will thus arrive late at night here if you arrive for the stargazing (otherwise I don't see any point unless you want to go all the way to the top, which is the summit and not the Visitor Center) - the drive from the main road once you make the turn towards the Visitor Center perfectly fine and easy - there are no light posts but there are these reflective little things in both the middle and the edges of the road - your headlights will perfectly thus mark the road for you - otherwise the only thing you will be able to see is just the stars in the skies :)

Once at the visitor center - there is some little info here and there to read, we did entertain this idea for a moment but to be honest we didn't come here for that - we come here as most people that time; to see the stars! For the most part it was a very nice experience but;

a. the visitor center closes at around 9PM or even 10PM - so it takes a while for them to turn off the white lights inside that spoil the experience - also they leave the red lights on, which aren't as bad, but still affect the experience - so you can go around the area maybe to try to avoid that or just stay at the parking lot (people coming in and out also do affect it sadly but we all need to park...)

b. the experience was nice but I was hoping for the absolute best of my life considering the altitude... to be perfectly honest it wasnt! The best so far I had seen ever was while on island of Eleuthera, Bahamas in the middle of summer one year - also, I must say the following night after we did stargazing we went at night tot he Volcanos National Park where the stars visibility was also better - for the record all 3 instances had perfectly clear skies with no clouds or moon affecting it - it must have been some gases or something in the air while here at Mauna Kea that felt like there was a "some kind of super light fog" as things weren't as crisps as they were in 2 other instances :( still an absolute must experience to have

Of course the pictures I took don't give it justice with the silly iphone but if you don't do the volcanos at night then this is your best shot at it while on Big Island - very memorable experience, very laid back!

TIP: it's cooooooold and windy! It wasn't as cold and windy as we experienced a week later in Maui on Haleakala (despite just a few feet difference) but you want to dress up to enjoy this! Also, in Maui = no restrooms at the top (where you want to experience it from) vs here on Mauna Kea there is a rest room at the Visitor Center that you will end up chilling at

We came here during our drive up to the summit.
To get used to the altitude you have to remain there for about 40 minutes before you continue to the summit.

We wandered aroud the place and like all the info that was displayed there about the volcano. summit and the observatory`s.

Nice views too!

Absolutely spectacular to watch the sunset from the top. But I’m writing this review mostly because we had a very stressful time with our fuel. We got to the visitor center with half a tank. The guys that assess you for driving to the top advised against it since the nearest gas station is over 30 miles away. But we are idiots on vacation so we went! The remaining range went down pretty quickly, but then really plummeted on the way down, with an indicated 22 miles of range left when we got back to the visitor center. Yikes! Put the Jeep in 2 wheel drive and started to limp to the closest station, only to find that the range just kept going up and up. We drove the 50 miles back to Waikaloa and STILL had 120 miles of range!

Lesson: if you have half a tank of gas at the visitor center you are totally fine to go up.

The top itself is other-worldly. Do it!

We really enjoyed being in the visitor center and walking around the area - spectacular views - but I could really tell the difference in the air at the higher elevation.
