It is not "temporarily closed"! They are open Tuesday and Friday, and it is definitely worth your time. It provides a historical glimpse into how the Japanese coffee farmers made a living in the 20th century. The coffee bushes and Macadamia trees thrive around the old family home (shoes off to enter!). I found this nicer than visiting a present day commercial coffee farm.

The Kona Coffee Living History Farm is a terrific opportunity to see a place where time has stood still and what old Kona was like in the 1930's and beyond. The Uchida family farm stands today as it was almost 100 year ago. The Historical Society will take you through the plantation and orchards and show what it took to make a living off the land as a leasehold farmer. Then you'll see the crown jewel of the tour: the original farmhouse and coffee processing sheds. If you want to learn about the island and it's agricultural heritage, provided by informed and entertaining (re: NOT dry!) docents, please visit. You won't regret it.

And, Kona Nightingales!

This is our second visit, and returning was on my must do list. I love the history of the site itself and the way the docents bring the family that occupied the house until 1994 to life. It's a great way to learn how the coffee business first began!

Very interesting building with exhibits showing some of the background of the Polynesian peoples that inhabit the Islands. Interesting to watch the baking and to assist with the backing of the sweet bread in the oven.

Stop by on Thursdays to watch prep of the bread for the traditional oven. info says you help with it but we were there on a "special" bake and not much chance to help. Even if there had been, no evident chance to wash hands so would be a real turn off to eat that bread.

We got the cinnamon buns for sale about 1245 in the tent. It was worth the 2 hour wait! They kept for two days only because I exercised great restraint.

Portuguese bread making is on Thursday and then the sell it. We always buy at least 2 loaves. Grand daughter 2 years old loved helping mom make the bread! We go every year when visiting Big Island.

In our WorldMark activities brochure, we read about the opportunity for the general public to help with the making of Portuguese sweet bread at the Kona Historical Society outdoor wood-fired stone communal "forno" (oven) down in the pasture below the H. N. Greenwell Store Museum just south of Kailua-Kona a few miles. Fortunately, it was a covered area because the clouds decided that day to dump rain! We got there at 10 AM and I took pictures while my husband and our friends and a number of other people helped shape the dough into 7 rolls for each of the tin pans. Something like 80 or more tins were filled with rolls, then left to rise under cloths. As we filled the tins, a young woman and two friends joined us in the shaping of dough, and when we saw she had a ukulele case and commented on it, she asked if we'd like to hear her sing. Of course, we all said yes, and she did a great rendition of "Somewhere over the Rainbow", then told us she sings in Atlanta with a group of South African singers as her back up! I'll put a plug in for her and say her group is called "Aviva and the Flying Penguins". They are good! While waiting for the rolls to rise and be baked, we took the opportunity to see the H.N. Greenwell Store Museum on the same property. They gave each of us historical names and lists of required items to "buy" and it was fun to see the various goods offered in the "store" and get a taste for life at that time. By the time we finished the museum and headed back down to the oven area, the rolls were coming out of the forno, and were a perfect color! We got to taste some of the whole wheat rolls, and while they were good as were the white rolls, NOTHING was as good as the Portuguese sweet rolls! What they didn't sell to us went up above to the roadside tent where we heard it usually sells out within a very short time as they have regulars who come every Thursday between 12:45 and 1PM, knowing they will be able to buy hot rolls! Not a crumb gets left! It was a very fun experience that even kids would enjoy!! We even had a recipe we could take with us.

Took part in the Polynesian bread rolling on Thursday as that is the day that they do it. Met some great folks and enjoyed the conversation. Get there at 10 to participate and/or at noon to buy the bread rolls.
