Beautiful black sand beach, not too crowded, mix of clothed and unclothed (I'd say 75/25). We were there in early March. Bare it all or not, no one cares. I will say there were no kids on the beach which makes sense.
There is great sun until about 4:30 when it starts to get behind the trees, so if you want warmth, go a little early. It is definitely a little tricky to get down to the beach - slippery and rooty, but maybe only 100ft of scrambling. If you start in the parking lot, look for the trail. You'll think, "that can't be it," but it is.
Also a nice spot for the sunrise - perfect views!

This is well hidden black sand beach off the road. It’s not easily accessible - you have to hike down to it. Although the hike is very short I’d say it’s fairly treacherous, steep with jagged terrain of volcanic rock and tree roots to trip you. Can be difficult as it ends with you having to jump off on to sand off of a large boulder, which makes it difficult to climb back out. I’d say definitely NOT a family friendly beach as there are quite a few nudists. Beach itself is gorgeous with strong crashing waves.

Popular for both locals and tourists alike, we happened upon this beach and loved watching the water crash against the rocks on the short hike in, and then standing on the black sandy beach and letting the tide cool off our legs. Surf is pretty rough so I am not sure I would feel comfortable letting children swim here, okay for braver adults. There was some nudity, but it didn’t bother me; there were kids around and they didn’t seem too fussed by it. Judgement free, beautiful place. Parking is along the road, then you hike a rocky hill to get down to the beach.

Great black sand beach, easy to access, some nudity but it did not bother us. Very bust on the weekends

Beautiful beach with lovely black sand but definitely clothing optional which was really disappointing to our family visiting. Didn't feel like we could enjoy our experience.

This is a black sand beach and for black sand, it is pretty smooth. It is a steep hike down, but I did it in flip flops. There was quite the eclectic group, families with kids, nude bathers, elderly - and everything in between. It is one of the only places to swim in the area. The waves were really big and crashes close to the shore, but nice place to relax. There is some shade, too.

Stopped by this beach to check it out. Found a place to park along the road and found the “trailhead” to climb down and that is as far as I got. I wasn’t going to try the climb down on two bum knees.
It wasn’t that important for me to get to this black sand beach as there is Punalu’u that is easier to get to.
Even for the amount of cars there did not seem to be that many folks on the beach.

This beach is such a hidden gem! My favorite black sand beach! The black sand, sun, dream catcher, trees, shoreline and whales breeching was just spectacular. We watched a baby whale breech for almost half an hour. Just amazing! It was such a relaxing environment, everyone was just enjoying the moment. Clothing is optional, and the day we went the waves were high so needed to be strong swimmer if you wanted to get into the water. If you are in the area this beach is a must!

Kehena Black Sand Beach has plenty of natural beauty.
I saw a variety of age groups enjoying themselves with or without clothing.
Now, I know where to book a room for a few days to explore that area of the Big Island. There are plenty of places to stay ; Hawaiian Naturist Park, hostel, lodges. There are many hiking trails in that area, too.

Hands down, my favorite beach in the world. Black sand, sun, shade, dolphins, perfect waves, amazing views, secluded, clothing optional, friendly people. Perfection.

Aloha GmaM, just wanted to let you know, that you reviewed the wrong beach. Kehena is in Lower PUNA, and the beach with the turtles is in the South, Its called Punalu'u Beach and its on the other side of the island...they are about 70 miles apart...kehena beach is a nude beach, lots of parties, and no bathrooms...its become popular with the party crowd and has gotten so dirty and frankly unsafe. Wouldn't want people to get the two mixed up and have get the wrong impression.
If you google Punalu'u Beach to Kehena Beach you can see it on google maps that they are different beaches. Thanks!

It's the place I live right near! It's still nice and the waves are big. There was no confusion as I go daily and there are not to many naked people and if they are they are quite discreet! So Kehena Beach-The nude beach, rules and I pick up trash daily and the people are warm and friendly. It's very safe. Come on down and I will sow you. Aloha
