It is an amazing experience just make sure you know how to use the brakes and pay attention to the road. The ride is beautiful!

Booked through Pride of America and paid USD 150 each for a promised 4-5 hr tour to the rim of the Haleakula crater with plenty of photo stops. What we got - 45 minutes on a bike only going to 6500 feet (as they hadnt paid the permit & hadnt changed their website yet!!!) and one photo stop. Then taken to a food truck even though the majority of other passengers wanted to go back to ship & made this known to tour operator who insisted we would all love the food. Only one couple bought any food - there wasted another hour.

I know you have to get up EARLY for this one, but it is worth it! We departed Lahaina at 2:50 am headed for the mountain and it was spectacular. When they tell you to wear warm clothes, trust them!! It was 32 degrees at the top and the wind was blowing about 33 MPH making the wind chill feel about 10.
After the sunrise they take you down to about 6,500' and get you on the bikes for a beautiful coast down the mountain.
This is a must do at least 1 time when visiting Maui! Spectacular views and a fun time.
The crew was also great, we had Willy as our guide and he was fun and kept us safe.
Recommendation: Bring a blanket with you to the top to wrap in ..it will keep you warm!
The bikes were a little dated but worked fine considering we just had to coast downhill.

Maui Downhill offers a unique experience: ROCKETING down the side of a volcano on a bike! Way fun!!!
The bikes and helmets have some pretty good wear but are fully serviceable. Great experience with these guys.
If you get motion sick then take a NON-DROWSY motion sickness pill BEFORE the van leaves the lot to start up the mountain!

The ride down was enjoyable, but there was only one stop for pictures. We’d thought there’d be several places to take in the views. Our weather was good and we had no incidents, although one rider in our group did have a bike where the wheels were out of alignment. Not a good situation on this kind of downhill. The leaders switched her bike and on we went without problem. The pre-ride safety talk was good. However, I think it’d be a good business practice and reassuring to the group for one of the leaders to make a point of visually checking each bike’s wheel alignment and pulling on the front and rear bikes before we started downhill.
Insofar as learning more about the area, we did get some information about Hawaii’s sugar and plantation days, but it was not presented in any organized way; it seemed more like random comments tossed in a free ranging conversation. I’m not sure if anyone in the back of the van heard much. The ongoing banter of one leader (Mark) was a bit too much.
One puzzling aspect of this excursion: After we finished our ride, we stopped for lunch at a place served by a food truck (paid for at our individual expense, not the tour operator’s). Why the stop? The tour was over by that point and many of us might have preferred to get on with our day in Maui. The food was OK, but there was nothing unique about the site, and we simply rode back to the tour company’s base.

DO NOT BOOK, if you want a reliable bike tour. After reserving months in advance, they cancelled the bike tour the day before with the explanation “your tour did not come together” which equates to, we don’t have enough customers to come pick you up at your hotel. But they offered a “free upgrade” for either the early morning tour (2:30 a.m. pick up at the hotel ... ya right)... or the 11:00 a.m.
Tour, which rides in the afternoon, catches a sunset, but then has you stay for a dinner ... when we asked for the 11:00 a.m. tour but take a pass on the dinner as we already had another reservation at a great restaurant that evening, the answer was “no we can’t do that as we only have one van” ... so #1 they don’t care about the customer experience, just making a buck and second only one van, so if something happens to the one van or one driver your screwed as well ... BOOK AT YOUR OWN RISK.

Great fun. Dress in layers. Guides make all the difference for a great trip. I can't remember their names but bus driver, van driver and bike guide were excellent. Recommend for a great family experience.

I was enthusiastic to book a downhill bike tour as it was a highly rated activity in maui, and I like sunrises and biking. Here is what i learned having done it:
1) pickup was at 230am, which is kinda early when you're on vacation. the transfers to get to the mountaintop (consolidating 2 buses, making a visit to the bike shop) is a bit inefficient as others have said. if you did it on your own, you could probably sleep at extra 1.5 hours. however, the additional financial cost of $25 to be driven by someone else for several hours is very reasonable and might offset the problems of inefficiency. unfortunately, we got a cloudy sunrise. it was still beautiful, but a bit disappointing. bus driver said maybe half of the days are cloudy like this.
2) the actual bike ride begins around 815am and ends around 10am. it is all on a well paved road, but only a single lane each way. it is definitely safer to do this with a guided tour, rather than on your own, which many were doing and our concierge talked me out of. in the group of ~20, we ended up going around 15-20 mph with a max speed of 29 mph over 14 total miles of downhill. faster than i thought we'd go! everyone seemed comfortable on the bike in our group including people in their 60s. we made one photo stop at the halfway point. the scenery was nice. smelled some eucalyptus which was pretty neat.
3) a note about safety. on our uber ride home (the tour ran overtime; we were in a rush to get back to the hotel and got an uber rather than go with the van drop off) our driver who was a paraglider said that these bike tours are too dangerous for his taste. that made us pause! he said that he used to live near the base of the mountain and that he'd hear 3-4 ambulances a week go up the mountain. he couldn't be sure, but figured that some proportion were due to bike accidents. we actually had 2 incidences occur on our tour that i thought must be an anomaly- one biker came within 10 ft of an oncoming pickup truck that decided to cross the double yellow lines, to pass a slower moving vehicle, and our actual guide (a college student) actually wiped out before our very eyes into the other lane and into the grass. he was looking backwards and lost control of his bike. we were all hugely thankful the oncoming traffic did not run him over! so, this is not a bike ride for anyone nervous on a bike. i thought the uber driver's statement about this being less safe than paragliding was a bit overboard... but this is definitely not a tour for a novice biker. i should also add, the bikes from maui downhill are old. heavy, with a rusty chain, single gear (pedaling was meaningless beyond 16 mph) and brakes that are not the most responsive. i was checking them occasionally to make sure they were functional and used both brakes rather than only the back wheel brake as a result. this company definitely needs to upgrade their bike fleet.

We had a great experience and we're lucky with the weather for this trip. Only a few vendors are allowed up on Haleakala for sunrise and Maui Downhill partners with Grayline's Polynesian Adventure Tours so you have to deal with their coordination issues, which were not too bad, but when they say they will pick you up at 2:50am and don't show until 3:15am, I can understand complaints. That said we had a great guide - Peaches - going up the mountain and then down to the start of the ride and the ride was really fun. Breakfast came at the end - around 11:00am at a really good food truck in Hailiimaile, so be sure to pack your own snacks to hold you over. Overall it was a really fun experience.

They said it would be 8-9 hours door to door. Frustrating inefficiencies, waiting around, logistics issues, incompetence, etc., we had to call an uber (our $55 expense) to get back to our hotel in 9.5 hours. Others had another hour of being shuttled about. Polyad handed the first part and were terrible. Late to pick us up because he went to the wrong hotel. Told us to buy coffee at a stop because “this is the best place before we drive up” then we drove 6 blocks to the bike shop where they had free coffee and rolls. Come to find out they were driving business to their friend’s store.
Great sunrise. The bike ride is fun. Can they find a way to do this in 5-7 hours instead of 10 or more? If so, I would highly recommend it. If not, find the patience of Job.

Did not do the zipline. We were not concerned about getting our shoes dirty during the bike ride. We just wanted to be comfortable. I think I wore hiking shoes.
