If one has already visited Boston, then the Crane Library in Quincy may look rather familiar: it was designed by the same architect as Boston's lovely Trinity Church, and the stained glass in the library's old section was created by the same master (John La Farge) who did the windows in Trinity.
Visiting the Crane library is not difficult; there is ample free parking on the east side of the complex, easily accessible from Washington street. This is a public library, so it is free to enter (and, yes, vagrants do sit inside, but they kept to themselves and weren't bothering the visitors or staff). The entrance closest to the parking lot leads into the new section of the library, which is handsome, but not nearly as visually appealing as the original building. Go up to the 2nd floor and there is a help desk, and they'll direct one around the corner and through a narrow corridor that links to the original Richardson building. That part, from the early 1880s, is quite attractive, with stained glass windows and lavish carved wood, and even an imposing fireplace in th east wall. A brochure is available at the help desk that describes the history and current locations of the various La Farge windows. Note that the old building is a still a functional part of the library, so decorum and silence are recommended.
The library was greatly expanded through the early 20th Century, and it's nice to see the additions seem to have carried on the external appearance of the original. In mid-May, there was a bed full of various colorful flowers on the south side of the main building.

The Thomas Crane Public Library is not just any library, it's a work of art. I was surprised to learn that the endeavors of three famous individuals are on display here. Architect Henry Hobson Richardson designed the first library building (a masterpiece of library architecture), artist John La Farge provided stained glass windows, and landscape architect Frederick Law Olmstead planned the original library lawn. The later additions to the building were also skillfully executed.
Many services are offered and one I often use is requesting materials online for later pick up at the library. If an item is not found in the OCLN system, an interlibrary loan can be arranged outside the network. Another favorite is the ongoing book sale. Users can donate their unwanted books and CDs; the sales of these items support library events and services.
The place is a hub of activity with many events scheduled every month; this includes the monthly art exhibit. The August exhibit, Art From Inside, was particularly interesting. It highlighted the activity of the Prison Book Program that has been sending specially selected books to prison inmates for the past 50 years. The art pieces on display had been done by incarcerated people and sent to the Prison Book Program over the years, several as a thank you for books received.
The library is a short walk from the Quincy Center red line stop; onsite parking is also available. My only suggestion for improvement is that the restrooms be cleaned more frequently.

The Thomas Crane library has a great modern portion, but the jewel of the library is the older section designed by H. H. Richardson. Built in a neoclassical style, the interior features tiers of bookshelves, polished wood details, and quiet nooks to read or study. It's really a beautiful building and a perfect place to get some quiet time in. The modern portion has a lot of books and media for checkout or reading, but in my opinion the architecture of the library is its best part.

Gorgeous architecture plus updated systems and an expansive network (OCLN) make for one of the best things about living in Quincy.

Thomas Crane Public library has the most helpful, pleasant employees. They are quickly responsive to requests for book recommendations and research articles. I try to visit at least once or twice weekly. Also, they offer a great variety of presentations on fascinating topics. Great displays of local artist’s works.

The Thomas Crane Library is an impressive historic landmark in the downtown area of Quincy. The large building was designed and built in 1881 by Henry Hobson Richardson, the renowned architect who also designed Boston's famous Trinity Church. The library had been renovated several months before our visit.
On my visit with a friend who lives in Quincy, we toured the whole building to check out the new additions and remodeling results.
Right near the entrance on the ground floor called G1 was Billy's Café just off the atrium. It’s open Monday to Saturday and serves sandwiches, salads, hot and cold beverages, snacks, candy, and ice cream.
Across the atrium was the Children's Room which featured a lounge area with easy chairs for adults and children as well as a computer area in amongst sections for the books.
G2 was the First Floor where the main seating area, room with fiction books for adults and teens, and audio/visual area with audio books, CD’s, and movies were located.
G3 which was the second floor held newspapers, travel, reference, history, law, and general nonfiction books as well as a Large Print Books section, an art exhibit, public computers, and photocopiers. There was even a self-service public fax machine that took credit and debit cards or a prepaid fax card purchased from the library.
We were impressed with all the resources and services offered there as well as the remodeling. We thought that they did a great job at modernizing the interior of the building.
We rate Thomas Crane Library at 4.75. We plan to go back to have lunch at Billy’s Café.

The library is a beautiful building keeping the gorgeous architectual design of the original section, with the modern addition. They have a bright and welcoming Childrens' section. The people who work there are helpful and knowledgeable.
