Wonderful visitors center chock full of information. There are still ships buried in SF! One is right by the TransAmerica building. The city burned down 6 times in a two year period!
There is only one historic ship available for touring, located across the street. Seeing the cargo hold was amazing.

Access to the old port costs $15 but you can only visit one boat, the others are no longer there or inaccessible.

I've been to San Francisco quite a few times and I had some free time before another activity I was doing near the wharf started so I checked this out. I found it interesting and I learned a lot, it wasn't crowded, and the views were great. I was there around one hour but actually could've spent a little more time between the ships and the museum. There are some ships there that are in disrepair. I have the National Park Pass, but honestly not sure I would've gone if I had to pay admission but at the same time I understand sites like this need reasonable entrance costs to maintain the historic structures.

If you're into history or old sailing ships, this place is super fun!
You get to see cool views of the Golden Gate Bridge, Alcatraz, and the Bay! Check out the Balclutha, an old ship from the late 1800s. Walk on the deck, discover various parts of the ship, and find out how they sailed and lived on it.

Visited this place on 14th of May 2023. The San Francisco Maritime National Historical Park is located in San Francisco, California, United States. The park includes a fleet of historic vessels, a visitor center, a maritime museum, and a library/research facility. Located in the Fisherman's Wharf neighborhood, San Francisco Maritime National Historical Park offers sights and stories of Pacific Coast. My wife and I love visiting locations within the National Park System and this is a very fun one to visit if you're near Fisherman's Wharf. There's six ships to visit on Hyde St Pier and it's $15/person to tour the ships (free if you have the America the Beautiful pass). We really enjoyed touring these historic ships and learning more about the maritime history of the area. I'd recommend giving yourself 1-2 hours to tour the area and you could easily spend more time. It's a fun place to visit overall!

We then went down to the Hyde Street pier to the San Francisco Maritime Museum. This is a national park run facility, so we all got in free by showing our park lifetime senior pass we had purchased several years ago for $10 (cost now is $80).
There are six historical ships floating in the museum area you are free to visit, but this grouping of ships and features is nothing like what we had seen in the privately run park at Mystic Seaport in Connecticut. Bottom line (TOM’s Personal opinion) = if you have to pay to get into this S.F. Maritime Museum (as of today there is LOTS of SLOW restoration work going on most of the vessels), suggest skipping a visit to this park, unless you are a hard core ship guy like me.

Visitors Center is a must see! Excellent displays and information regarding the maritime history that shaped the history of San Francisco. The exhibits are amazing. Across that street the pier and ships are neat to see but they were all closed during our visit. The maritime museum had great murals but very little else to see. So bottom line see the free visitors center, pay for the ship tours if open and skip the maritime museum or plan on a very short visit for the murals.

We were on a road trip so bought our America the Beautiful National Parks Pass which is $80 and valid for a year. It meant that we could visit this and all the other National Parks on our trip and save a fortune in doing so. It was lovely to read the history of the boats and wander about without the crowds along the bay. A nice way to spend an hour or so.

There is Free parking in the wharf area. It goes really quickly though. I was able to park at Boudin Bakery and Cafe. We ate lunch and walked the rest of the Wharf to the museum and looked at the boats. If it is full, you can park downtown and take the trolley. Thats what we did the day before we toured the ships. We parked for $12 all day close to the Mall area and caught the Cable Car to the wharf.

First, you can park along the street but the problem is it is 2 hours at a time so you have to feed the meter at 2 hours. It might be better to park in a lot. This place is cheap and not along walk to pier. Imperial Parking (U.S.), LLC
