Many locals do not know of this hidden gem. McLaren Park has many walkable paths and some of the best views of the City. People play pickle ball and practice Tai Chi on the weekends.
Be smart avoid the area at night. Do not leave valuables in your parked cars. To the northeast, is the up and coming Portola Neighborhood. The main street, San Bruno Avenue, has some good Latin and Asian eats.

This park is a nice place for a walk. It's not very crowded. You may encounter someone here and there. It's not somewhere that's been taken over by tourists. So it's a good place to go if you want to get away from crowds. There are some views from certain points in the park. There are at least 2 bathrooms. One is just a pit toilet by Redwood Grove, which was horribly bad. The other is an actual building and was much better; this one was by the amphitheater. There are supposed to be several other bathrooms as well.

Our car window got smashed and luggage and everthing taken so be careful. We were parked near the pond taking our son's dog for a walk.

My husband and I enjoyed walking and birding in the park. We saw many hummingbirds, chestnut-backed chickadees, and pygmy nuthatch there. It's a relaxing and lovely area that's not as crowded as other parts of San Francisco.

McClaren Park was created in 1927. It's named after John McLaren, who among other achievements is known locally as the "grandfather of Golden Gate Park." It's in Visitacion Valley, overlooking Mission St. in the Excelsior, and if you've seen the 80-foot tall blue water tower at its crest, you know which hill is home to the park.
Eclipsed in size locally only by better-known Golden Gate Park, it features playgrounds and swim pool, picnic and dog play areas, tennis and BB courts, as well as a golf course and McNab Lake.
More than 7 miles of trails wind through the park, the best known being the 2.7 mile Philosopher's Trail. After a half hour of relaxing on the forested hillsides, you can easily forget you're surrounded by seven million souls packed together in the Bay Area.
So bring a book, dog, coffee, card deck or other analog device and unplug for a few hours!
