I have lived in the Bay Area 30 years but just came upon this museum down the block from the cable car terminus. It was very well done and complete. My friend new to the area found it very informative. I found it to be very well displayed.

I was hoping to save this trip for my next visit. I had gone a couple of years ago and it was a neat little museum to explore. I had never heard of it until I saw something on it, I can't recall if it was a flyer or something else. So sad to know this place is closed. They had a lot of history! I really wanted to go back. What a shame. I do hope they reopen but I can understand if they close, SF is no longer what it used to be. I am guessing their rent was sky rocket and couldn't afford it. I hope they know that their museum was a wonderful little treasure. (I'm reviewing this a couple years to late, but the earliest "visit" I can post is Sept. 2014).
I had found some pictures from the museum I had, I hope that at least since this place is closed, you can see some of what the museum had offered. I was really hoping I could've taken my boyfriend to this museum when we would be able to visit the Bay Area again because they had a lot of film history and he's a film nut. Still sadden this is no longer around. I do hope they reopen somewhere else. If not, I wonder what they did with all their cool collection???

Don't waste time looking for it, the museum is closed. No idea if there are plans to reopen. While in the neighborhood check out the beautiful Sir Francis Drake Hotel across the street and have an original milkshake at Lori´s Diner on the corner.

Took a beautiful 2 mile stroll on a gorgeous SF sunny day only to be told the museum no longer exists. What a shame! I was so looking forward to a little history lesson

This museum offers a broad range of history for the area. It is a great place to spend a couple of hours. And the $5 entry fee is a great deal. The location is very convenient, which helps make a full day of enjoying the area.

Why does the TripAdvisor rating jump from average to 'very' good I wonder? I'd rate this museum 'good'. We spent a happy hour exploring, and the 5 dollar admission is decent value. I think they could really raise their game by better presentation. Some exhibits had no accompanying explanations. A number of rooms had screens showing relevant information though in several of the rooms the screens were blank. Quiet when we visited. I think it would be very unsatisfying if busy as the layout is a large collection of small rooms. Certainly worthwhile.

For such a small museum we spent most of the morning in here. It was free as Loris Diner gave us vouchers, but only a small cost if you had to pay. My husband loved the info on The Gold rush and kids loved slot machines, Shirley Temple and hippy room. I was fascinated with the Sutro Baths (wish they were still open looked amazing) and the Cliff House. Loved all the old tin signs going up the stairs and old posters. Hidden gem well worth a visit.

I've always been frustrated that there really wasn't a good one-stop museum dealing with the history of SF. This is a step in the right direction. It chooses to highlight a dozen or so topics (Gold Rush, Quake, building of Golden Gate Bridge, Haight Ashbury, etc.), rather than being comprehensive. In most rooms there is a good video presentation, so I found myself spending a lot more time in the museum than I'd anticipated. Definitely a good choice for a rainy day.

At first sight this doesn't look like a museum from the outside as it's hidden away on the 4th floor of a building on Powell Street that houses a popular restaurant. I only came across it by chance after eating at Lori's Diner across the street and noticing on the receipt that it entitled you to free admission to the History Museum so I was intrigued and went to have a look. You just walk past the restaurant entrance and either climb the stairs or take the elevator to the 4th floor where you show your receipt or pay the normal $5 museum entrance. The place is packed with fascinating stuff about the history of San Francisco, including lots of memorabilia and archive video footage. At first I didn't realize the extent of the place so sat for some time in the first room watching an interesting video about the gold rush. Then I noticed there was a corridor leading to a series of other rooms covering themes such as the earthquake, famous residents of SF, movie stars, Alcatraz, the hippie generation etc. There's a room all about Shirley Temple Black. With so much to see I somewhat lost track of time and spent far longer there than I had anticipated. Definitely worth a visit.

I was walking down Powell Street and was captivated by the entrance. It looks like you're walking through one of the Golden Gate Bridge's Tower. I rode the elevator to the 4th floor to the museum. I paid $5.00 dollars and was given my admission ticket that appeared to be Emperor Norton's Currency. I was told that it was a self guided tour and started in the Barbary Coast/Gold Rush Room. There are about 22 rooms that are filled with great exhibits such as ; The Panama Pacific International Exposition, Shirley Temple doll collection, Hippie Room, a replica of an Alcatraz jail cell and more. It was cool and I hung out there for about an hour and a half. I found this museum to be educational and worth visiting. I'm definitely telling all my friends and family.
