For all its historic and scientific importance, this is now, as the attraction title says, a gate. Well, a small building looking old as it should, as you enter the city of Los Alamos from east. It is on NM-502, and thus makes for a quick and easy ingress and egress. The significance of this place is that it was the main entry point to enter the labs here, which has a fabled (infamous?) history as being the cradle of Manhattan Project. We saw a restroom here, but unsure of whether it is for active public use. A place to get out, snap a couple of photos and get right back in to your car. A definite visit, even if a short one for science and history buffs.

This is literally a photo op with a bathroom, a map of the area and some pamphlets about other attractions in the area.
After taking a photo, I highly recommend that you go to the Los Alamos History Museum before going anywhere else because you will get so much information about the history of the area, you may not need to go anywhere else.

Drove out to this thinking it would be cool,It was just a building sitting alongside the road,no information,no other buildings ,just looks like they moved it there as a picture opportunity. We were killing time waiting to get in to our rental so drove over here, because of covid the museum was closed. So i wouldnt advise this as a trip if thats all your going for..

This new park is at what used to be the only entrance to Los Alamos, after a drive up the road -- NM highway 502, which runs along the side of a cliff.
(If you aren't used to mountain roads, please pull off at the overlook part-way up, a couple of minutes after you start the climb, to let other people pass. The view from the overlook is worth a stop, anyway! At the overlook, turn around and look at the cliff face. There's a very steep road cut into the cliff. That's the original highway, with a hairpin curve at the top, which was much more treacherous! )
There's overnight RV parking here; call the park office at 505-662-8159 or Los Alamos Police dispatch at 505-662-8222 for info. But the main attraction is a replica of the original pass office where people coming into the guarded city had to prove permission to enter. (Newcomers got permission at an office on the Plaza in Santa Fe.) Only the facade looks real; behind it are display cases with information, and most of the building is taken up by two rest rooms.
The original building wasn't here. I believe it was near the lookout tower which you can see a few hundred feet away along NM 502. It was replaced by a sturdier building, which stopped being a guard station after the city opened to the public in 1957. (At that point, security moved to individual laboratory buildings outside of the city center.) Unfortunately, the displays here don't explain that... you should be able to learn more at the Los Alamos Historical Society Museum and the Manhattan Project National Historical Park building.
There's a big complex of buildings in the canyon below the park. This is fairly new, too. Ignore that and take a look across the canyon and toward the Jemez Mountains a few miles west of here... you'll start to appreciate the way that this city was built on mesas separated by canyons.
I'll include a famous photo of a 1930s-era car parked in front of the original pass office. During the annual ScienceFest (which may not happen in 2020), people bring cars of that era to the park. (Search the Los Alamos Reporter for a story titled "Bring Your Manhattan Project Era Cars To Main Gate Park for ScienceFest.")
