Can be slow to get rentals and tickets since not many people work there. Our first instructor was pretty bad but second one was great. Slopes are challenging for us beginners. I have met people that came after skied in Santa Fe for more challenging slops.
Price can't be beat. I saved so much $$$ on lessons, rentals and lift tickets. Always check online to see if they have any special rates. We will be back for more next season!

Great family friendly ski resort and incredibly priced well. This is an excellent place for first timers with great instructors that were extremely patient with my kids and all three kids were first timers in the morning and running greens at the end of the day. The facility shows its wear and tear but I’ll trade that for no wait lines and half the cost to other resorts.

Really enjoy this ski area, and good value. Lots of blue and green cruisers and some fairly advanced mogul runs. Parking is convenient and it is only 20min or so from Los Alamos.

Went skiing with a kindergartner yesterday. It is a very nice local slope. The beginner hills were well layed out. After the little one was done we went up for a few runs. The snow was great but being the 1st day the moguls weren't there yet. We managed to find some nice powder. Pajarito is a small friendly mountain for some comfy relaxing skiing.

The record levels of snow have covered over some of Pajarito's difficulties this year. The Townsight lift is closed. The Spruce lift has also had its issues in 2018-2019. There have been many problems since the area fires of 2000 and 2011 and the transfer of operations from the ski club to private ownership. The area is mostly closed on Mondays and Tuesdays. I've had problems with the lifties helping me board the old two-man, center-pole, single speed Mother lift.
That said, this is a convenient, old-school ski area with some interesting runs, especially if you ski the challenging black diamond runs. It is also priced accordingly.

Pajarito is a good ski area where you will have a great time if you are not concerned by well-worn facilities and equipment. Since that doesn't particularly bother me, I had a great time.
If you're more into saving money, this is well worth the low price of admission.

There are two loop trails adjacent to the ski basin [Aspeñola and Cañada Bonita], Both are about 3 miles in length. The Cañada Bonita trail is longer, but you can stop at the first huge meadow. The Aspeñola Trail is actually a mountain bike run, but it is great for hiking as well. If you can hike these trails in the autumn, they are particularly beautiful: quaking, golden aspens, purple asters, scarlet Virginia Creeper, and all set against the incomparable deep blue NM sky. Neither trail is technically difficult, but there is a fair amount of uphill going so if you are not accustomed to the altitude (approx 9K') then you might need to stop along the way to take brief breaks. Regardless of which season you
choose, take sun protection and water. Dress in layers because you can start out chilly and then be roasting an hour later.

The ski hill can be used for all sorts of outdoor recreational activities. In the summer, I climb up the slopes to get in shape for hiking up Colorado's 14ers. In the winter, after the skiers are done, I snow show up the slopes. I hear the mountain biking is great. In the summer, there are beautiful picnic areas.

If you are a skier this is where you eat. We like to drive up to the ski area and watch. Sometimes our daughters and their families are here. There burgers are good but my favorite is their Frito Pie, a genuine New Mexico meal. Don't order it if you can't handle medium spicy New Mexico red chile.

I have come to Pajarito from Santa Fe after some on-line research with wife and 3yrs old son for a 1st time Family Ski experience and we all loved it!
Over the phone with Marcy all info was provided and she was amazing. Follow-up calls with instructors (as my son would take private lessons) were also timely, respectful and very informative.
We scheduled a 2hr "never ever" class at 10am and arrived around 9am following instructions provided over the phone. It was perfect, due to the paper work required plus all the equipment required (ski boots are not as easy to put on as they look :) ) required.
Beth and Ben were our instructors and they were AMAZING. Patient, careful, after a little over 1 hr we headed to the "magic carpet" and felt very happy about our progress from "zero" to gliding down a short hill!
My son also loved his private class but after 1hr he was too tired and decided to accept the offer of a hot chocolate from the staff member.
Being 1st timers we loved every single moment spent at Pajarito and will definetely hit back in the future.

This will be our first time skiing, I have chose Pajarito due to being budget friendly and needing the lessons.
1) We are looking at the first week of January, is that a decent time to go skiing? (I know weather is unpredictable, just trying to get an idea)
2) With that being said, do I need to bring a heavy (puffer) ski coat and a lighter ski jacket?
3) I have read reviews of rickety ski lifts here, how are the lifts, my 8 year old may have issues with rickety lifts (as may I!)
4) How are the rentals at the mountain?

It can be a little advanced, but my 7 year old had his first (group rate, but he was the only student) lesson there and was able to ski down from the first lift by the end of his 2 hours! The instructor guided him down using a hula hoop to hold onto. Brilliant! The snow is really low now after this heat, though.

where do you stay when you ski at Pajarito? is there tubing here? trying to decide between apache or here for the 21-25 of December 2016. Any one have any suggestions? i am an intermediate skiier but my 3 teens boys have never been and i want them to have fun like i did when i used to go as a kid to Red River. Its just always crowded that time of year.

There's a Holiday Inn and comfort Inn as well as many bed and breakfasts in the Los Alamos town. All of them are about equally close to the ski area in terms of driving. Pajarito, except for a couple special days, is almost never crowded!! There is no tubing at the ski area. After a heavy snowfall there are some unofficial sledding hills in Los Alamos itself but these are not marked on the maps and they melt out and thus are not reliably there.

Can someone tell me how crowded Pajarito will be Dec 19 to 25? I went to Ski Santa Fe last year after Christmas and the wait line was one hour. I don't want this to happen again. So I wonder if it is significantly less crowded if I go before Christmas, like less than 10 min in the wait line? Thanks a lot!

You will be very happy with the lift lines at Pajarito. I have never had to wait more than 10 minutes in a lift line ever. And I would bet it was no more than 5 minutes. I will never ski Santa Fe again. I have been to Pajarito on weekends when there was NO wait and there were very few people skiing the slope I was on. If you consider staying at Hilton Buffalo Thunder, you can ski Pajarito, Santa Fe, Taos, Sipapu, Angel Fire, and Red River.
