That truck will make the drive and your paint will be just fine. Come up the Old Ore Road from the south end. Otherwise hike to the tinaja is not long; but, the rock formations are with the trip. However; don’t stop at the tinaja. Scramble up and beyond the water hole and continue on through the cut into the valley beyond (Ernst Basin). Explore there a little and look for the trail that goes south, from the exit of the cut, back up and over the ridge above the cut to the parking area. Nice hike. Couple of hours depending on how long you linger along the way.

Having read about the difficult road to get out there and the warning by the ranger to have a high clearance vehicle, I called charles@angellexpeditions.com to find out if they could take us out there. He convinced me that our SUV would be fine... And it was!! Thank you Charlie for being so honest and helpful!!! We had an SUV, not a particularly high clearance one, and we made it out there. 5 miles of VERY slow driving, but you have to be confident on this rocky, bumpy dirt road with a couple of steep places. Once you get there, it is a beautiful hike. Check out Earthtrekkers.com for a great description on how to navigate the trail itself.

If you're up for a bone-jostling drive of about 35 minutes in and back out again (my Subaru Outback did just fine!), this is a hidden gem in a park full of wonderful spots. Geologically fascinating (look for the fossilized clams!) and really beautiful generally, I'd say this was one of the best decisions we made on our trip to Big Bend. We saw one other car the whole time.

We loved hiking this trail with our 3 small children. They enjoyed climbing on all the rocks along the trail. Very interesting and unique rock formations.
You DO need a truck or other high clearance vehicle. It’s a 25 minute drive down a VERY rough dirt road to get to the trailhead. We thought the drive was worth it once we reached the tinaja!

After a slow tedious 5 mile drive on one lane rocky rutted roads, this gem of a place is exhilarating! The hike back to the prettiest area is rigorous and not for the faint hearted, though there were families with small children making it. It’s about 3 miles round trip from the trailhead. In Jan., the temps varied from 60-70 and there weren’t a lot of people there.

Walk past the watering hole. Amazing little find. Walking up and over rocks. We had the place all to ourselves.

First things first, the drive out to this hike is on a narrow, dirt road, sometimes there is not room for 2 cars, if you actually see another car. It is 6 miles long, but you can't drive faster than 5 miles an hour. We hiked with hikers ranging in age from 15 to 70, no one had any trouble. The hike is short, but very pleasant. It is mostly flat, with the last portion over some rocky areas. Once you get to the Hole, stop and enjoy the view. We didn't actually see a frog, but we know we saw something jump in the water, so keep your eyes open, and maybe you will catch sight of some living creatures. It takes longer to get to the hike than it does to hike the trail. There are NO facilities at the trail head, so plan ahead.

The trailhead to the Ernst Tinaja (spring) is located approximately 5 miles down a primitive, white crushed rock road that can only be accessed by a vehicle with high access (SUV). The hike is one mile in and out and an easy walk until you get to the Tinaja, at that point you must hike over and through rocks. The tinaja is interesting, but the real interest are the rock formations that you see as you get closer to the tinaja. An easy hike, but it would be an extremely warm hike if done in the middle of the day. We hiked it in the morning and were the only people out there.

We were in and out in an hour once we reached the trail head. The trip on the white crushed rock road takes 20-30 minutes because you have to drive slowly.

We would have never known about this amazing find if we had not asked our Canoe Guide for some suggestions. We were there on busy, Easter weekend and we were still the only ones. It wasn’t even listed on the map as a trail, we just followed directions to the Ernst Tinaja Campsite. It takes about 20 minutes to get to the trailhead because of the rocky, dirt road, but such a cool drive. The trail is the best part! It’s quick and easy, but different than any other hike. Talk about a Geologist dream! Take your kids! There is a million and one rocks and crevices for them to climb on and over and jump off of. The end pool is neat, but not half as impressive as the hike there. We took lunch and ate on the beautiful, red sandstone rock in the shade. When you’re done here, the Hot Springs are only about 5 minutes south once you’re off the dirt Old Orr Road. This makes a nice afternoon.

(with kids age 8-16)

It took us 20 minutes of driving in our Rav4 on the dirt, pot-holed road to traverse the 4.5 miles to the trailhead parking for the Ernst Tinaja Trail (1.0 mile RT) Surprisingly the road was busy, as 4 other cars were at the trailhead, and 3 had passed us coming from that direction. Actually we were more impressed with the canyon walls on the walk in, instead of the tinaja (water hole). The canyon walls are tilted and expose many rock layers with various patterns of colors. I'm sure people with a geology interest would especially enjoy this area. Definitely a hot walk in the afternoon sun. We might have enjoyed this hike more in the early morning with cooler temps and less noisy people at the tinaja.
