Added the Thirsty Monk to our brewery tour in Asheville, this is a pretty interesting spot. The top floor is a “speakeasy” cocktail bar that requires a small membership to get in. The main floor is the main brewery and restaurant. They had good beers and the vibe inside was chill. Downstairs is a Belgium beer style basement with great choices as well. The missing start is because they are not Doggo friendly and there wasn’t even any outside option for sitting with the Doggo.

There were a few locals at the bar and one other couple. It was dark and unappealing. Might be livelier later in the evening. Don't know. We regret we did not choose another place among the huge selection in this busy tourist town. I do not recommend this place at all. They serve some very nice heated up empanadas. They were out of pork? In a pig bar-b-que town? Should have been served with sour cream, salsa, etc. Odd place.

My boyfriend and I went to Thirsty Monk for dinner after visiting Top of the Monk downstairs. The bar was a standard bar set up (lots of bachelorette parties on our night there!). The beer was good, nothing too life changing but definitely not bad. On the other hand, my boyfriend and I ordered two food flights and were surprised when they came out looking like lunchables. Probably a good fit for a drunk bar snack, but don’t plan on a full meal and don’t go out of your way for it.

We visited several breweries in the Asheville area and stopped by the Thirsty Monk for some Belgium brews. We went straight downstairs. The bar was dark, a bit cave like - but we enjoyed it. Our bartender was great, providing beer suggestions along with recommendations for local food. We were not here long since it was our last brewery of the day but we enjoyed our time here.

Living in the Charlotte area, my husband and I frequent Asheville and love to go for long weekends and enjoy the area. We always make it a point to visit the Thirsty Monk bar because we have had great experiences at the low key, intimate bar upstairs. We typically bring friends and check out the different drinks and ask the bartenders what they suggest, always looking to try something new as they have a variety on the drink menu. The bartenders in the past were always very friendly and happy to introduce us to fun options based off of our preferences. Our last visit (10/11) was a poor experience. After checking out the menu we asked the bartender about one of the drink’s ingredients, he rudely said “try something else”. We selected drinks from the menu and enjoyed them, then went to another bartender afterwards to see what he suggested, and again felt like we were bothering him. We didn’t feel welcome or as if they even wanted to be there. Needless to say, we finished our drinks and went elsewhere. It’s a shame because we used to love coming here, and it has been a favorite spot for several years but I think we will need to find another go-to.

My husband and I have been visiting the Thirsty Monk for years. It’s always a must-visit when in Asheville. They’re brewing their own beer now and, honestly, it’s just okay and making the bar less appealing in my view. But still, I love it there.

I’ve never felt more unwelcome at a bar in my life. The bartender definitely did not want to be there and let us know it not by words but how we were treated! Beer was ok. Will not be back

My wife and I spend a lot of time in Belgium and know quite a lot about Belgian beers which is why we had to try this place. We came later on a Friday night and it was quite packed. It’s a little bit of a dive bar with a homey feel to it with an amazing menu of great beers. The main floor is just ok and we found the bartenders to be pretty rude. They weren’t explaining to anyone that there is no table service and that you had to order beer and snacks at the bar – no eye contact, etc. whatever. The beer was top notch and they even had fridges you could buy some take away beer. I would recommend you go downstairs where everyone was friendly and they have all the Belgians you can think of. I actually had an awesome conversation with a guy dresses in a full monk robe (I assume he was the owner) and his knowledge of beer was impressive as I know the difference. Both he and the extensive menu made this place a great stop and I would highly recommend to the beer aficionados out there.

We went to the one downtown. We started at the top bar and my husband got a flight. He loved the porter with coconut. We then went to the downstairs “Belgium” bar and shared a raspberry lambic which was delicious. Music much better downstairs and if you like the dark, hole in the wall feel you will prefer this bar.
