Interesting but limited access
2019年8月
The African Meeting House is affiliated with the Museum of African-American History. It offers limited access via a ranger-guided tour on the hour. The tour is more a ranger talk, which is interesting. That being said, the limited access to the House makes this a difficult stop, especially if you’re trying to coordinate this stop with others.

Visited following in the footsteps of Frederick Douglass. Limited schedule. Nothing going on and I’m the only person there. Hippie at the desk tells me next tour is in 40 minutes. Me: “Can I pay the fee and just take a look inside the meeting house?” Hippie (gears obviously grinding inside his head): “Um, I’m really busy right now.” Typical government funded cluster.

Excellent slice of Black History in Boston
2019年3月
This was more of a talk than a tour. The interior of the house looks like a church which was also one of its functions. It also served as a meeting/recruiting center during the civil war and events leading to it as well as a stop on the underground railroad. The floor boards are original to the structure and it was humbling to realize I just walked on the same floor as Frederick Douglass and Harriet Tubman.

Wonderful piece of history

Enjoyed the tour of the meeting house and the Abel Smith school. Simple and rich in history. Took advantage of the Frederick Douglass exhibit they had as well. Wonderful to see and reasonably priced.

Essential to Understand the Abolisitionists in Boston
2018年10月 • 夫妻情侣
This is the end of the Black Heritage Trail. The House is run as a joint venture with the Museum for Afro-American History and the National Park Service. Unfortunately, we got to the House close to the end time, but still enough time to look through the Frederick Douglass display, but not truely absorb his words and deeds. This is a good stop to make to understand more of the Abolitionist of Boston and their effect on America’s view of slavery. We were later able to take in a presentation by the Network to Freedom group which helped enlarge some of our understanding.

We really enjoyed our visit here. We first enjoyed the photography exhibition of Douglas . Then Michael took us on a really enjoyable trip round this lovely meeting house. He was a great guide, friendly and helpful as well as informative.
It is well worth visiting.

Great educational tour..See the Meeting House AND the museum
2018年6月 • 独自旅游
The African Meeting House is a beautifully preserved part of Boston's Museum of African-American History and a nice, quick stop along the Black Heritage Trail. The actual meeting house…aka church was the first Black church in America. The museum exhibits change from month to month. A National Park Service ranger is your guide, and they do an hour-long tour during the week for $10. They’ll talk about abolitionism & the underground railroad, and free blacks in early years Boston. Right now they have the main museum centered around exhibits of Frederick Douglass. Quick, not bad for the price, and not overrun with tourists either. It’s something you could do on a long flight layover, and still see the rest of Boston Commons & downtown & the harbor.

Redolent of history and change
2018年3月 • 独自旅游
such an interesting place, beautifully preserved and presented to us wonderfully by our guide Michael. He was very informative and also interested to hear other people's views and information, so it felt like a discussion rather than a pre-prepared lecture. You an sense all the historic figures who spoke there and changed the history of African Americans. There was a wonderful exhibition of photos of Frederick Douglass, which I found totally fascinating. It really showed how vital Africans themselves were to the struggle for abolition and positive change. The debates, the intellectual tone, the focus on education, the revolutionary fervour were all redolent in the walls of the place. I really loved it.

The Black Heritage Trail

The Black Heritage Trailに含まれる施設です。フリーダム・トレイルとはちがって、ビーコン・ヒル内で完結するような感じです。内装も外観と同様に、すっきりとした感じですが、歴史を感じます。

Fascinating glimpse into the early African-American community in Boston
2017年7月 • 好友
The African Meeting House is part of Boston's Museum of African-American History and a wonderful stop along the Black Heritage Trail. The museum exhibits change from time to time, but the hourly tour to the adjacent Meeting House is simply wonderful. Our National Park Service ranger guide was excellent -- full of fascinating detail with an great overview of abolitionism, slavery, the underground railroad, and free blacks in 18th/19th century Boston.
