This is a smallish museum that offers very few galleries and exhibits for USD15 per adult.
The exhibit fail to impress and most of the building consists of the museum shop and a restaurant.

It basically is a nicely designed restaurant, with a gift shop, not remotely resembling a museum. That's the ground floor. The first floor pretty much is an art gallery, similar to what you may find in New Bond street. The only difference is they charge you 14 US dollars. It's nice, but calling it a museum is an overstatement.

As much a beautifully designed restaurant/bar space as art gallery, the Mingei is a joy for both those who want to enjoy a lovely lunch or the intimate and elegantly curated museum space. The monthly theme dinners look tempting although I have yet to have a chance to attend one. Truly a unique space within Balboa Park.

This is a lovely but very small folk art museum with a beautiful collection from around the world. It took us less than 30 minutes to walk through the upstairs exhibit space but it was a nice reprieve from the bustle of Balboa Park.

The Mingei Museum features a beautiful building, with a bustling modern restaurant and sample exhibits in the lobby.
Unless one is an aficionado of folk art from select parts of the world or found the lobby's sample exhibits fascinating, the upstairs gallery (that requires admission) will likely have little of interest. One hour should be more than enough for most visitors.

This medium-sized museum was a real find in the crowded list of Balboa Park museums. I'd never been to the old version, but the renovated version that just opened is beautiful. (I'll attach some photos.) There's a new cafe that adds to the list of museum cafes to visit.
There's a sparse ground-floor exhibition that's free to visit. To see most of the collection, pay to go upstairs. (Hint: If you're a museum fan from out of town, buy a NARM pass -- North American Reciprocal Museums -- as part of a museum membership. It gets you into around 1,000 museums, like the Mingei, for free. There are lots of NARM institutions around San Diego. Note that some museums, like many in San Diego, won't accept a NARM pass from other museums geographically close to them.)

We enjoyed the limited exhibitions that were available as they packed everything up. The museum will be closed for a year now, for a total renovation.

We enjoyed the Mingei Museum while visiting Balboa Park. They have a history of fashion exhibit from the House of Isrea which was intriguing. They also had collection from pop culture artist William L Hawkins. They also had a fascinating rare books collection which ended up being my favorite exhibit.

Adored everything here- William L. Hawkins' work is a treasure to see, the Jewish art exhibit was so eclectic, really incredible selection, loved the book exhibit and the ancient beads.....So sorry if they are closing for renovations.
