I knew that this was a brewery but did not expect so few beers from others.
Lot of strange stuff and listing not well organized. Maybe 10 people in the place. The checking of ID's at this place goes beyond absurd. My wife and I are both over 60. She was not drinking at all but without her ID we were told that we would both have to leave. When I asked the bartender if she was serious, she told me that it was state law that everyone had to show ID. BS.

We stopped here after the Opening Day game at Petco Park. They were slammed. Even though it was so busy, we were served promptly and with smiles. We had numerous beers and cheesesteak sandwiches. All the beers we had were very good and the food was even better. I really enjoyed their Friar Fanatic beer. My wife's Naughty Cheesesteak was excellent. I had their regular cheesesteak and it was good as well. This place isn't too far out of the way and is definitely wilorth going to.

I visited on a recommendation from a bartender at another brewery. The beer ranked as one of the top I had in SD. The big surprise was the cheesesteak. Holy $&?!$&! I expected mediocrity. It was not. I am a huge fan of IB Hoagies in the Bay Area and this matched if not exceeded their sandos. And with the lunch special of 1/2 cheesesteak, fries and a pint for $12 it is a steal. Go! Just go.

We stopped here on recommendation if a friend for their beer and Philly Cheese Sandwich. The as sandwich lived up to the recommendation. The various Monkey Paw beers we tried were very good, brewed there on site. The place had been recently remodeled and was a very nice place to enjoy a beer and food with friends. Coronado Brewing just purchased Monkey Paw, do you can also get many of their beers on tap.

Really deserves 3.5 Stars. Fun atmosphere, but not the greatest layout. Service was a tad slow during a not-so-crowded night, but they did apologize recognizing they were not keeping up. GREAT selection of rotating handles, but the tap list was not well organized and did not include IBUs, just ABV and cost per pour. I prefer the craft beer joints that organize the tap list by beer type to make it easy on the eyes to find taste preferences.
High Points: Michelle and Genevieve are wonderful (and beautiful - great hair and captivating eyes). I tried the Pongo Pale Ale with Jalepeno and Pasilla. VERY GOOD for a Pale Ale and paired exceptionally well with the garlic fries and wings. I also had the Sweet Georgia Brown which was SOLID and made for a nice finish to the evening. You can try ANYTHING and EVERYTHING, especially when they are not too busy. And, Michelle can provide SOLID recommendations based on your taste.
Don't Believe the Hype: The fact that I had to put ketchup on the garlic fries should tell you what you need to know. The fries are good, but not as good as most reviews. Can't confirm, but I am pretty sure the buffalo wings are just Frank's RedHot sauce. They were good, but certainly not unique or special in any way. Wish I had tried the Sweet Georgia Brown BBQ wings because the Brown Ale by same name was SOLID. Guess I should have tried the cheesesteak sandwiches which everyone around me were RAVING about.
Awkward but O.K.: I sat at the low bar toward the end (by the bathrooms). I could not see the tap list AT ALL forcing me to abandon my seat each time I had to decide on a beer selection. All I could see were the taps in front of me. The advantage of that seat was that I was right next to the food window. Yes, you order food separately from the beer (Genevieve's window), but at least they can add it all onto your tab seamlessly.
Bottom Line (BL): GOOD, but NO reason to go out of your way.

Two of us walked from Hilton Bayfront to Monkey Paw. Was longer than expected, but we'll worth it. Building looks a bit depressed from the outside, but everything inside is fine.

Great beer selection and very good cheesesteaks. Very small, and can get crowded quickly. Off the beaten path, but worth a trip.

Superb beers, the reward is well worth the adventure of finding the place. Great beer range. A little brewery that beats the big boys hands down

Blairsteak cheesesteak. Cheese curds. Downs Family Stout.
O-M-G I love this place. The boyfriend and I have been on a cheesesteak kick lately. I think at one point, we had cheesesteaks for dinner from a different place every night for a week straight. That's 7 cheesesteaks in 7 nights. I think my pants are getting a little tighter... must stay focused! Squats! Burpees! Jumping lunges!
My rambling aside, we really had a great experience here. It was our first time at Monkey Paw a few weeks ago. Our bartender was really nice and patient with us as we sampled a few different beers before I eventually decided to go with The Downs Family Irish Stout. It's really smooth, flavorful, easy to drink, and I would definitely order this again and again because I just love coffee and chocolate anything.
The bar definitely has more of a divey and laidback vibe. It wasn't too crowded on a Friday night, and we were lucky enough to grab two seats at the bar. Great spot for a casual date night or hanging out with a small group.
Now to the food. The boyfriend and I are kind of cheese curd aficionados. It might even be an obsession. We've had amazing cheese curds from all over the country, but I think Monkey Paw might crack the top 3. I just loved how gooey and chewy it was on the inside. Pair that with some buttermilk ranch, oh YUMMMMM!
The cheesesteaks were delicious too. I ordered the Blairsteak with white American, sauteed onions, bell peppers, and shrooms. The boyfriend had the Naughty Monkey with a signature Naughty Monkey sauce, pepperjack, and a spicy serrano and onion slaw. I think the key to an awesome cheesesteak is the bread. That roll HAS to be the right consistency, texture, and chew. Monkey Paw nailed these too. A half sandwich was more than enough for me, so the portions are pretty decent too.
Location wise, it's not exactly in the prettiest part of town. You are kind of away from all the crazies of downtown, but there are def some sketchy streets around, so choose your parking spot accordingly. East Village is a whole lot better now than it was before, but there's still quite a few homeless people wandering around.
I can't wait to come back for more!
