Lovely statue presented to New Orleans from France. Orleans was one of the French towns Joan of Arc defended from the English in the Hundred Years’ War. Surrounded by plaques about Joan’s campaigns and nice shrubs and trees on Decatur street.

The Joan of Arc monument is located in Joan of Arc Park at the intersection of Riverside Drive and 94th street. It may be reached by M5 bus or the red subway line to 96th street station, followed by a short walk in a westerly direction. The monument is hard to access, as it was surrounded by perimeter fencing which seemed to indicate that construction was being done near to the monument.
The equestrian monument of Joan, with sword held aloft, is mounted on a granite base which was designed by John van Pelt, and dedicated in 1915. Limestone blocks from the tower where Joan was imprisoned (in France) have been included in the base. The years of her life are stated on the front of the base i.e. 1411-1431, and a coat of arms is shown above this. Anna Hyatt Huntington was the architect of the equestrian monument. It may be easily missed, as it is in a well shaded area, and is difficult to see from the road.
Joan, whose real name was, Jeanne La Pucelle, was appointed commander of a small unit, which was instrumental in defeating the British at Orleans in 1429. In the following year, she was captured by soldiers of the Burgundy duchy and sold to the English. She was tried for witchcraft and burned at the stake in 1431. In 1920, Joan was canonized as a saint.
The area next to the park is quite pleasant for a stroll, and the soldiers and sailors monument is a short walk south.

This beautiful bronze statue was made by Anna Vaughn Hyatt and is located at 93rd Street and Riverside Drive. Riverside Park is a lovely area to walk in and the statue adds beauty to this relaxing part of NYC.

Bella statua posta nel Riverside Park ( e non nel Central Park come scritto nella precedente recensione ) con poderosa figura dell’eroina in bronzo posta su un massiccio basamento di granito . Il Riverside Park è una delle nostre passeggiate preferite e , quindi , spesso ci fermiamo nei pressi di questa statua per riposarci e godere dell’assoluta tranquillità della zona .

Nel 1915 a New York venne inaugurato il monumento in bronzo a Giovanna D'Arco, poggiato su un blocco di granito, monumento molto bello che si trova a Central Park.

I love this statue and am sure that very few New Yorkers know either unless they are observant or park goers. It is one of the few statue dedicated to a woman here in the city. Beautiful design and in a peaceful spot on the west side. Lovely spot to pause a moment. In a busy day.

Во время прогулки по Риверсайд парку увидели эту статую,похожую на статуи во Франции и Вашингтоне.Прочитал историю создания и оказалось,что в прошлом году ей исполнилось 100 лет.Автор работы — Анна Хайат-Хантингтон — за свою жизнь сделала 3 скульптуры Жанны д’Арк. За первую, сделанную для французского города Блуа, она даже получила орден Почетного легиона. На фигуру французской героини в Нью-Йорке собирал деньги специальный фонд. Установку приурочили к 500-летию со дня рождения орлеанской девы.Красивая скульптура,настоящее украшение парка

Красивый памятник француженке Жанны Д арк. Мы были удивлены увидев его в Нью-Йорке, но оказалось что этот памятник был подарен жителям города. Монумент довольно внушительный.

My companion is named after Jeanne of Arc, and we often walk in the area, and always stop by -- the light and the little island are always beautiful here.
A few more factoids to supplement my earlier review:
One of the benefactors for the statue was the copper king, William Clark, who Mark Twain called "as rotten a human being as can be found anywhere un.der the flag."
There are three other public statues in Manhattan that portray actual women: Eleanor Roosevelt, Harriet Tubman and Gertrude Stein.
The head of the competition for the design wrote: “Our Committee has decided upon several things; one is that the statue must be artistic, and there will be no question as to whether the sculptor is American, Russian or Hottentot, nor does the committee care whether a man or a woman designs the statue. Upon one thing, however, we shall be insistent, that is, that the statue must be worthy of one of the greatest personalities that has ever lived, of one of the greatest of ntions, France, to which it must also be a tribute, and to the coming greatest city in the world, New York.”
The artist, Anna Hyatt submitted the statue to celebrated Salon in Paris in 1910. The jury was so impressed with the quality of the work that it was quite certain that Hyatt had either had help or it was not her work at all – no woman could have executed such a skillful piece. She was, however, awarded an honorable mention. The Americans, however, made her the winner of the competition.
The artist used her niece, Clara Hunter Hyatt, astride a barrel, as the model for Saint Joan and borrowed a horse from the nearby fire house.
To ensure authenticity, the Curator of Armor at the Metropolitan Museum of Art was consulted regarding the appropriate armor. Dr. George Frederick Kunz, President of the committee, subsequently remarked that “it is the belief of the committee who have the honor to erect the statue that it will be the first one ever created in which the armor worn by Joan of Arc is true to the period and therefore authentic, thus adding greatly to the interest and value of the figure.”
A small copper box was placed inside the base containing a letters from President Woodrow Wilson to George Kunz; a letter from the Governor of New York, Charles Whitman; one from the vicar of Rheims Cathedral and from the Cardinal of New York; several French and American coins, bronze medals and plaques; and a “fairy stone” that symbolized the tears of Saint Joan.
It was considered a triumph at the time, especially the horse: “Indeed too much can not be spoken in praise of it. In the opinion of many competent critics it is by far the finest equestrian statue in New York, unsurpassed by the Siegel of Bitter, the Grant of Partridge, the Slocum of MacMonnies, the Sherman of Saint Gaudens, by Shrady’s ‘Valley Forge’ horse in the Williamsburg Bridge Plaza, or even the Washington by Ward in Union Square.”
