You get to experience years of history here with the museum's exhibits, collections and films. We saw the "I'll have what she's having...the Jewish Deli" exhibit and enjoyed the experience. It showed how Jewish delicatessens became a cornerstone of American food.

On a recent Saturday, we enjoyed an hour or a bit more in this museum. The exhibit about the African American potter, though just one room, was well done. There was quite a bit of pottery on display, but the exhibit explored his life in terms of being a Black man in a white society, bringing in larger social issues of his day. The Tiffany exhibit was unexpected and enjoyable too- the lamps are displayed quite well with a mezzanine to help view the tops of them. The large room with the paintings about New York is worth a visit, especially the huge Picasso. Stop in if you are in the area!

The 18 minute movie does a reasonable summary of 400 years of history, with a mostly positive spin. The staff is helpful and the coat check is free.

This is a little known museum that is well worth the trip and which bills itself as NYC's first museum. You can combine a visit here with a trip to Central Park, as it is right across from the park, or even going to a play as it is relatively close tothe theater district. We did the later as we went to the museum before seeing a matinee.
I grew up in NYC and never heard of this museum before my wife, who also grew up in NYC, mentioned that she wanted to see the “I’ll Have What She’s Having”: The Jewish Deli experience exhibit. So when we visited our son who lives in the NYC metro area we took the opportunity to go here and were not disappointed. Both my wife and I grew up eating Jewish deli, although she is more of a fan of this cuisine than I am. For her it was very nostalgic and she enjoyed it immensely as it bought back pleasant memories. The exhibit is well done and goes into the history of the Jewish deli which has largely disappeared, but are making somewhat of a comeback. For our adult son, who was somewhat less experienced eating deli, it was a learning experience. Both my wife and I had previously seen a film on Jewish delis, so the exhibit did not provide new information for me.
There are also other exhibits at the museum and I liked the toys and trains exhibit.

The oldest museum in NYC, dating back to 1804, with lots of interesting exhibits, and the docent "highlight" tour is well worth it (thanks PAM!). Spent three hours there, which wasn't enough, but got tired standing on our feet.

This interesting, often-overlooked museum sits in the shadows of the AMNH but is worth a visit of its own! We came here to see a special exhibit on the history of Jewish delis, and we thoroughly enjoyed it! The exhibit was organized with a loving attention to detail and was both informative and occasionally hands-on. I was surprised at how much research and information they were able to provide on Jewish delis - I hadn't realized that it was a topic of historical research, although given their importance in the NYC social landscape, it makes sense. This museum also has other exhibits (the exhibit on toy trains was really cool!), and I saw that they'll also have an exhibit on the history of the Salem Witch Trials. The store had a lot of cool stuff in it.

I didn't know what to expect when I went to visit this museum. I took the free guided tour (about 45 minutes), and I'm glad I did. This museum is a gem. It has lots of different types of exhibits. Some concern the history of New York of a century or two ago, and some deal with more recent history. Many of the exhibits had a human rights element to them. All of it was interesting. My advise - take the free tour. You'll get more context for the exhibits, and you can always roam around later on your own to see more and linger.

The N.Y. Historical Society is a true gem for anyone interested in history. Go see the current exhibit "Meet the Presidents". That exhibit contains a "Tour of the Oval Office", which is a replica of the White House Oval Office. The Society's Library is also very impressive!

I loved it here. Wonderful museum. Tiffany lamps exhibit was extraordinary, as was the third floor permanent collection. So much to see. Had no idea all this was here. Loved this and will return happily and hopefully soon. I wish they had more t-shirts in the gift shop with the museum name on them. Great restaurant attached, and across the street from the natural history museum. And across from Central Park! Winning day.
