There are guided tours of the Gracie Mansion on Mondays, costing $10 and supposedly lasting around an hour although it was an hour and a half on the day
I went, probably because the guide, whilst very nice and engaging, did talk rather a lot! We got more for our money but it was a bit waffly and repetitive at times and some of the "anecdotes" didn't really have any point to them. I am not from the US so perhaps they would have been more interesting if I had been familiar with the various mayors who lived in the house. There is nowhere to sit down while the guide is talking so it was quite a long time to be on our feet. The tour covers the entrance hall and 6 rooms on the ground floor, half of which date from the original 1799 house and half are in the same style but were added in the 1960s. Photography is only permitted in one of the 1960s rooms. I'm still glad I went because it was something a bit different to do whilst in New York.

It took me a year of planning and re planning, but I finally got a chance to tour this beautiful home, nicknamed (or so our guide said) NYC's White House.
I'd planned to visit last October (tours are given on Mondays) only to have my flight time change. Then my June visit coincided with the Juneteenth holiday. So when I learned I'd be in DC, I decided to combine a day trip to NYC with the tour.
It was a perfect early fall day and the view of the East River was beautiful. Most of the tour guests were interested in historical homes, and a few were from overseas. Luckily, the Mayor wasn't hosting a working lunch or staff meeting, so we met our guide at the front door and went inside.
The blues we saw in the main reception room were inspired by Jackie Kennedy's redecoration if the White House, our guide explained, and a close watch was still kept on the People's House for design concepts. Who knew?
Photos were only allowed in the first room we saw, though there is a virtual tour with pictures on the Gracie Mansion Conservancy website. We toured the ground floor rooms, all of which were carefully maintained and furnished with period pieces. The rugs throughout the home that we saw were quite stunning.
Although the home became the official residence of NYC mayors relatively recently (Fiorello La Guardia moved into the house in 1942), the site dates back to Revolutionary War times, when George Washington commandeered Belview Mansion, which stood there. A new property was built in 1799 by Archibald Gracie and this still stands today.
The property is located in Carl Schurz Park on the UES. It's a popular venue for city events, too. Tours are free and should be booked in advance as they are popular.

An interesting house tour of the mansion the current NYC mayors live in. The docent tour is interesting, offering the history of the building as well as facts about inhabitants and the furniture. You can only enter the building with a tour so make reservations which are free (donations accepted.) The park around it -- Carl Shurz Park -- is on the waterfront and beautiful to walk through

What an interesting tour this has been! We learnt about history, interior design, NYC politics it’s mayors, who haves lived here with their families, or not! The house has been gorgeously renovated while respecting the period decor and it looks fabulous. Our guide, Susan Goldman, was as personable and enthusiastic as she was knowledgeable. I’ll be back with family and friends!

I booked my free tour online a few weeks prior to this tour. I immediately received my confirmation for this tour by email. This tour lasted around an hour and it was docent-guided. I thought that the staff was friendly. The guests needed to show an identification (ID) card and to pass through a metal detector. There were bathrooms and drinkable water at this site. The guests were able to see the whole first floor which depicted an abundance of history for a few centuries. The dining room was amazing with its wallpaper, its furniture, and its architecture. The library, the living rooms, and the hallways were also incredible to see with interesting tables, chairs, pianos, and more. There were additionally many fireplaces which were found throughout this house. Unfortunately, photography was not allowed in many places.

The Gracie Mansion and Catalyst exhibit virtual tour are a great way to spend your evening. A wonderful alternative and a great way to still have the museum experience during this time. The docent, Susan, provided an excellent narrative and history of Gracie Mansion and skillfully led you through the mansion and exhibit. The Catalyst exhibit is very insightful, educational, thought provoking, and could not be at a better time.
I highly recommend this tour for everyone and all ages!

The tour of Gracie Mansion (the People’s House) was excellent. It was highlighted by “She Persists: A Century of Women Artists In New York.” This outstanding art installation is on view until December 2, 2019. The tour is free, offered on Mondays, and must be booked in advance via the Mansion’s website.
Captivated by the art, I forgot to ask a few specific questions about the history of Gracie Mansion. It didn’t matter because everyone was given a brochure about the “She Persists” collection, which also included the history of the Mansion.
Photography is not permitted during the Gracie Mansion tour, however, it is allowed in the reception room.

"She Persists" is a stunning and inspiring display of female power and grace--and just in New York! We need more exhibits like this for the good of today's young women.

I lived in NYC 1966-71 and never visited Gracie Mansion. This is a fabulous tour of this home, built in 1777, at one point a concessions stand and restrooms, and ultimately the residents of all the mayors. The tour is fascinating: a real time capsule of history. There was a wonderful exhibition while we were there called She Persists. 60 art pieces by women doing art in NYC 1919 through 2019. The tours are only on Mondays, and you need to sign up ahead. It's easy. And, the tour is wheelchair accessible. Be sure to take a walk through the park afterward.
