This was my first time here. I would walk by occasionally and recently decided to go.
Focused primarily on art/artist from smaller Asian countries like Tibet and the Himalayas it is 6 floors covering periods from BCE to 2023.
Very interactive it is a must visit for anyone interested in art from those regions.
The last open day to the public is October 2024, so hurry, You need about 2 hours to really see everything and they are open til 10pm every friday

The Rubin is sadly closing in October of 2024. If you read this review before then, you should go. If you read it after, you missed out on this space, but check out what they’re doing as a museum without walls. The Rubin is a hyper focused museum and all the better for it. We’ve been to scores upon scores of museums around the world, but never one focused on Himalayan Art specifically. And it’s appreciated since the art of the area is too often tossed in with Indian and Chinese or far worse “Asian Art.” While the focus is on more traditional pieces, there are contemporary and interactive elements as well. We highly recommend a visit.

Worth a stop in the cafeteria! The lamb meatballs in a tomato sauce are amazing and the espresso drinks are nice and strong.
In terms of the art, the museum is not too large so it is possible to enjoy it pretty comprehensively in 2/or two and a half hours. Get a guided to her if one is available. If you're a NARM member at a different Museum you will get reciprocal free admission.

The view and arts were so beautiful. my son really likes it. Would recommend going again. Next time i would like to bring my friends and even more family here.

We were wonderfully surprised by how great the Rubin Museum collection is. Nearly every example of art in the museum, from China, Nepal, India and more, were among the best specimens, real masterpieces, of that motif or god. Amazingly high quality. And that wasn't the best of all... two floors of the museum are essentially devoted to wonderful learning experiences, teaching very easily something about the culture that produced the art. The Tibetan Buddhist Shrine in the museum was a revelation. And the gong exhibit was one of the most interesting interactive experiences I've had in a museum. Really thrilling curatorship. Bravo!

A small ( in the former Barney's space), but well organized museum of Asion art. We were lucky to go on a night when admission was free (Friday). The museum is open until 10 pm which is great for after dinner. There was a small cafe and dance music playing. The staff was welcoming and friendly.

Beautiful space, great exhibit and friendly staff. We really enjoyed the Death is Not the End exhibit.

Me gustó mucho. El edificio era el de unos grandes almacenes de lujo, reconvertido en este museo, que recopila obras de arte de distintas épocas de la zona del Tibet (India, Nepal, Buthan...) y está todo muy bien ordenado y de una forma muy didáctica. Tiene también una planta en la que puedes relajarte, meditar, respirar, pensar... Me pareció genial. Y las obras expuestas son de una gran belleza.
Organizan actividades, incluso en su cafetería, que tiene sesiones con DJ. Me encantó el concepto del museo. Una muy agradable sorpresa.
Tienen "pay what you wish" los viernes de 6 de la tarde a 10 de la noche y hay que comprar las entradas por anticipado en la web.

Interesting museum but unfortunately a visit I did not enjoy. Lots of unattended young children climbing all over sculptures while the security guards stand around and watch and say nothing.

Nice little museum that is a little bit different. Focussed on Himalayan art and has a good collection of artifacts which are all well described. We weren't sure if we would enjoy it but it was well worth the visit.

There is a 24-hour parking lot on the corner of 17th Street and 6th Avenue. There are also a number of parking garages and lots on 17th Street between Union Square and 7th Avenue. (From the Rubin web site). I also think public transport options are preferred, but if you have to have a car... Be aware it will be expensive.
