My thoughts on the 2022 revival of Meredith Wilson's "The Music Man" which we saw at the Winter Garden Theatre on Broadway. (I had seen the original, both on Broadway and the 1962 film version, both of which starred Robert Preston as "Professor" and con man Harold Hill.)
The 2022 revival stars Hugh Jackman, a hugely popular actor; but he's no Robert Preston. It also stars Sutton Foster, whose singing we have enjoyed in other settings, as librarian Marian Paroo; but she, too, is no Barbara Cook or Shirley Jones.
In my opinion, the star of the 2022 revival is the choreography (by Warren Carlyle), with special bravos to the ensemble numbers on the train ("Rock Island," very similar to the original show) and in the library ("Marian, the Librarian"). Star-turn dance applause to Mayor Shinn's daughter Zaneeta (Emma Crow) and her boyfriend Tommy (Gina Cosculluela), for whom The Music Man is their Broadway debut. Also knocking the socks off his Broadway debut is young actor Benjamin Pajak, who plays Winthrop Paroo, with his lisp.
Don't get me wrong: The Music Man is still a great show, nostalgic for older theater goers like us, but also a wonderful introduction for young people to the Broadway musical genre. The music and lyrics are still clever and memorable, the sets are great (special tips of the hat to "Wells Fargo Wagon" and "Marian the Librarian" in this revival).
But the revival's musical direction forces the show's smart songs into a too-rapid pace; on several occasions, Jackman and Sutton seem to be rushing through their lyrics to keep up with the orchestra. Sutton's voice is beautiful, strong and clear, but with a few exceptions, her acting doesn't enrich the music with important visual emotion (niticeable in "Piano Lesson/Good Night My Someone" and "My White Night"). In fairness, Sutton does achieve a few special moments with her acting, especially in Act Two when she's (finally) falling for Hill.
And Jackman just doesn't have the timing skills to couple with his voice for maximum comedic effect (this is exposed especially in superstar numbers like "Ya Got Trouble" and "Sadder But Wiser Girl"). (Apparently Robert Preston wasn't as much of a singer as he was an actor, which may be why he succeeded so well in the role of Hill.)
The revival wonderfully reprises other highlights of the original: the barbershop numbers, the "Pick-a-Little" ladies, and "Shipoopi."
But the choice of Shuler Hensley to play Hill's con man sidekick Marcellus is a near disaster; Hensley's interpretation lacks any of the spark once brought to the role by Buddy Hackett in the film version. And sadly, for me, the big gleaming musical crescendo of "Seventy-Six Trombones" at the show's conclusion fell flat, too. Not enough actors in uniform (and the uniforms seemed a little threadbare), and the orchestration seemed to have been "jazzed" to make it more contemporary (or something).
Overall, I recommend the revival; it's still a thrill. Just keep your expectations in check.

We watched The Music Man at the Winter Garden Theatre! The show was warm-hearted and fun, and the theatre is designed so that all of the seats offer a great view!

Loved our Mezzanine experience to see THE MUSIC MAN!!!!! Bravo! The theater is so small and manageable. No matter what seat you choose, you will have a great seat and great views....even the $99 seats in the Mezz!

My husband and I flew from Miami to New York last week so that I could finally see Hugh Jackman and Sutton Foster in The Music Man at the Winter Garden - I had waited 2 1/2 years since buying the tickets to see the show and it did not disappoint. You have to have your CDC card and ID as well as your ticket to get into the theater. All the staff were very nice, the exception being the stupid man walking around with a sign that says Masks Up. I understand that masks are required in New York theaters at the moment but he treated us like children, the one time mine slipped a quarter of an inch below my nose after having blown my nose, he came right up to me and told me very grimly to lift it back up again. Very OTT in my opinion. The show itself was fabulous, the sound was great, the seats were comfortable and the theatre is beautiful. Hugh and Sutton were amazing as was the whole cast and I highly recommend the show if you are looking for an enjoyable and uplifting night out!

My first time to a Broadway show and it was exceptional. This theatre is really cool and intimate. Comfortable, great views from any seat.
Staff was friendly inside and outside the theatre ushering folks to seats.
If I had any complaint it was too warm in the theatre but that’s probably because it was 10 degrees outside. So you can be confident the heat works!
Would have preferred some con sessions to be open during intermission but again that’s a small thing.
Would definitely go back to the theatre and if you get a chance to see Music Man you must go!

Everyone talking about cramped seats must have never been to other theatres on Broadway! This theatre is one of the few with any kind of leg room and without the seat arm rests digging into my body. The restrooms are on the orchestra/entry level, which is rare on broadway as well and super appreciated. We saw Beetlejuice here and the show was phenomenal.

This theatre has been around forever. I have seen shows there, including Beetlejuice earlier this week. Not a bad seat in the house. This time I sat at the far right side of the back of the orchestra section, and the view was fine. I would do it again.
The only warning I would give is that it's really hard to get to the bathrooms on breaks. The hall area is very small for so many people, and the theatre has mastered a winding line managed by the staff.

Great play, but ushers were terrible!! The play was outstanding, but the ushers didn’t assist people getting to their assigned seats, so in the middle of the show a complete row had to be moved and disrupted all of us in the row!

Hi. What is the theater’s policy on bags? When we visit the theater I will have a backpack with me as we will already have checked out of the hotel. Will this be a problem?
Thanks.

Not sure. We booked via a website - attraction tickets direct- who gave us a confirmation and we picked up the tix from the box office at the theatre.

Hi all
Can anyone recommend a good reasonably priced restaurant close to the winter garden theatre for dinner either before or after the show.
We have tickets for 23/09/18
Thanks in advance. Jools

Ellens is a good shout for its entertainment value alone. Very nice before a show as well . Queues could be a problem allow time... Hard rock cafe ok as well. Plenty of places actually. Heartland brewery very good as well.
