The generic, institutional interior is not
a place to make a special trip for. In fact, I found it a
bit depressing.
Student work is routine.
A tiny shop supplies students.
I don't see anything there that could be called "a museum".

The Art Students League of New York is a free museum located very near where I was staying in midtown Manhattan. I saw a collection of prints and lithographs by female artists that was quite interesting.

*Accessiblity info - they have a special lift only for those with need. To access it, you go to a door left of the main door and ring the bell [hard to see, a very small white button to the left in the door frame]. A security person opens the door and runs the elevator for you. I didn't know they ran it, so began running it myself before she arrived.
We were brought down the same way.
They have a small shop filled to the rafters with professional level art supplies and a few staff that actively help.
We went into the student gallery show of portraits - many full length ones. Extremely high quality. I enjoyed this show a lot. It would be most beneficial for anyone considering attending a class here to view work and get a sense of the teaching / teacher's approach from seeing the end of year work.
Another show of a few professional artists, smaller works was in the entry hall.

The art Students League is an amazing historic art school from the 1890's.There are so many talented and amazing teachers that teach is so many different area.

It is amazing to come see one of the most historically significant places in the world for art and artists in this landmark building on 57th Street. It is even more amazing to come and be a part of it, by taking a workshop, listening to an artist lunchtime talk, signing up for a month of classes and venturing into a world of creativity .... or just coming to an exhibition in the gallery space. Do it and change your life.

I would strongly recommend a quick visit to the 2nd floor, where two of three dozens of student works are on exhibit. It's free yet professional, a refreshing pause in the midst of the commercial frenzy just outdoor.

The facility has deteriorated to sub standard.
. Packed classrooms with no circulating fresh air;
. For months, areas were over-run with rodents;
. Glaring led lightbulbs at eye level;
. Dangerously shaky high ladders and tables;
. at least one classroom violates fire safety code.
. the sculpture area was fogged up for months because
no one bothered changing the ventilation filters. etc. etc.

This is an excellent place for almost any kind of artist. Workshops galore. Have been attending weeklyworkshops and even just a weekend seminar on occasion and the teachers are superb.
