This was a really interesting performance and the small theater makes all seats good. It was quite a walk from the train station but definitely worth it. Most reasonable concessions at an off-broadway theater as well.

We have seen 2 CS Lewis productions and thought both where very well done! The theatre is comfortably small so every seat is good. My advise is to get on the email/mailing list for advance notices and discounted tickets. When you buy the tickets online there is a link to parking and restaurants. We booked both and were well pleased!

A Taste of Honey by Shelagh Delaney (1938-2011) has been performed countless times around the Globe. Its a play for all times, a drama on humanity, reality, friendship, sex and love. - The usual suspects!
What's different about this production, directed by New York's own Austin Pendleton, is the lack of insight and forethought; Honey is a very British play and requires a very British understanding of what life was like in Northern England in the late 50's/early 60's.
Unfortunately Mr. Pendleton's direction is somewhat misguided and poorly blocked. Even his talented musicians are moved from stage-right obscurity to center stage prominence - placing them uncomfortably throughout he play - sitting stoney-faced on a sofa as part of a poorly placed prop in between their musical interludes.
At some point the actors dialogue goes from talking to us, the audience, to them, the musicians - with no reaction from them. Not sure what the Director had in mind but it's distracting and takes away the movement and concentration from the plot.
And what of the plot: Well...a woman 'of a certain age' and of a a 'certain profession' (Helena, played by Rachel Botchan), spends most of her middle age moving from place to place with her impressionable teenage daughter, Jo (Rebekah Brockman).
What transpires is the single mother falling for and marrying an equally self-centered and dysfunctional man (Peter, played by Bradford Cover). Jo, looking for love - in all the wrong places - finds a sailor who is Black - (Jimmy, played by Ade Otukoya), has an affair and gives birth to a bi-racial infant. This short-lived romance has Jimmy quickly pulling up his anchor in search of more exciting times - and disappears. In comes Geoffrey, (John Evans Reese), a young lad in search of himself, with no family and possibly Gay - although, not explained sufficiently in this rendition, who takes up residence as the 'den mother' and supports Jo, until the return of the crazy mother!
Honey was a success on film, in London's West-End and on Broadway in previous incarnations but this Honey is far from sweet.
The actors perform diligently and had good Northern UK accents, Shame, though, about this overall production.

Workshops are always a good thing to be a part of when developing a play and in this small intimate theatre it proves a close and personal experience as an audience member. If in town, see a play in a small venue and get up close and personal into the play and this small theatre does great workshops and plays in progress. Check it out.

This was a powerful show! Although CS Lewis wrote it long ago, the content is absolutely appropriate for this time in history. SPOT ON.
I would have given this five stars but for one reason. The demon "toadpipe" is a bit too sexual for a Christian theatre piece - perhaps it was the actress interpretation of this performance (This past Sunday.) She gyrates and grinds often while squirming on the floor, also constantly sticking her tongue all the way out of her mouth.
The male lead was AMAZING in his performance of Screwtape. His performance was stunning - and so was Toadpipe's (but for the unfortunate pelvic thrusting,grinding/tongue licking).
One more thing: There is a question and answer session with the director after the production - this was fun and informative! LOVED IT. Looking forward to seeing more!

Recently saw the Fellowship for Performing Arts production of C.S. Lewis' "The Great Divorce". Seat were great 5th row center. The theatre is small so the view from any seat would be excellent.

The Pearl is an Off-off Broadway theater located on West 42nd Street between 10th Avenue and 11th Avenue and is devoted to bringing the classics to life for today's audience. We recently saw the play "Don Juan" by Moliere. Mr. Jess Burkle did an excellent job of adapting this play for contemporary times. The story of a man who loved too many women was still relevant in 2015. I was pleasantly delighted, the play was funny and the performances by the cast were all very good. The show was 2.5 hours long with one 15-minute intermission.
