The Thurmont Historical Society itself was founded in 1988, but the town dates back to 1751. The office has a resource library of books and journals that cover the town, county, and region of the state. The Historical Society appropriately occupies a house that is over 200 years old. Creeger House was built as a woof frame dwelling in 1820 and was bricked in 1876. It holds pride of place among the other 19th century homes among Church Street. Edwin and Ethel Creeger were the most recent owners having acquired the property in 1924. The family deeded the home to the Thurmont Historical Society in 1990. The town is fortunate to have such an educational resource.

The group of volunteers who have restored the Creeger house and provided a place for research of the history and genealogy of the local families have created a true gem. I called in advance and volunteers were there to show me the house and more importantly, one of these volunteers took the time to share her own research on her families and showed me where our families had intersected in the early days of the community. I am truly indebted for what she taught me about how my ancestors lived and worked there. While the tour of the house and sharing about the history of the community took less than an hour, the time shared regarding the genealogy could have gone on for many more hours.
